I don't often make sub boxes, but I have. I just aquired a pair of MTX RoadThunder 8's. (ya, I know they're crap) I was just wondering if one of the audionuts in here might know an ideal enclosure volume for my crap subs for the best possible sound.
Thanx in advance |

If you had (and could rely on) the T/S parameters for the subs, then you can use free software to determine a pretty decent ported enclosure. There's plenty out there for download. I used to play with boxplot a bit, which seems to work fairly well.
Without them, it's hit or miss. Most often miss.
So, with the cheap end of the sub market, the safe money is on a sealed enclosure. Sealed enclosures have some advantages, in that they can help with power handling (Until you get to the voice coil's thermal limits) and are far more forgiving with the actual size.
As a rule of thumb, I take the sensitivity rating as a measure for the rough size of the box. This must be measured at 1W/1m. If they rate it at 2.83V, subtract 3. It they rate it at 0.5m, subtract 6. (The 2.83V assumes a 4 ohm voice coil. In the case of a 2 ohm voice coil, subtract 3 more. If it's an 8 ohm voice coil, you can add that 3 back on.)
Anyway, the higher that rating, the larger the box should be. At about the 87dB @ 1W/1m mark, about 0.5 cubic feet is a reasonable start. At about 93dB, you'll want 1.2 cubic feet. A bit smaller will give you tighter midbass and less low extension. A bit larger will give a bit less attack and more extension.
For 8" subs, you're probably not going to get a lot of bass extension anyway. I can't find any parameters on those particular models with a quick google, (not even marketing numbers) so I don't know quite where to start. I still wouldn't be likey to go beyond the 1.2 cubic foot mark for ANY 8" subs, regardless of the sensitivity, and most likely wouldn't go larger than 0.75 cubic feet, since at that point, I can find 10s that will work in that, and the only reason that I'd go with 8s is to save space. |
