Drumheller Cruise Day - Saturday, June 28
We will be leaving Edmonton at 8am sharp! We will be meeting in Sherwood Park at the Sobey's Parking Lot off of Wye Road. Map below. Reason we are meeting here, easy access to HWY 21. I will be there at around 7am. There is a Timmy Hoes right beside Sobey's.
Sherwood Park Sobey's , SOUTH SIDE
Route to Drumheller: HWY 21 to Camrose, go through Camrose to HWY 56 and head straight South to Drumheller.
Drumheller Route
We will plan to be in Drumheller at around 11 am-ish and head straight to the Tyrell Museum. I think we will spend approx. 2 hours in the Tyrell then we can do some picture taking at the hoodoos or at Horseshoe Canyon.
After that, I was thinking of heading into Calgary for lunch. I don't know about you guys but I wouldn't mind hitting up Pete's Drive Thru for some “low cal” burgers and shakes. The drive to Calgary is about 1.5 hours.
Route to Calgary: HWY 9 South then West to HWY 21. Turn South and hook up with HWY 1 to Cowtown.
Calgary Route
If that is not something you want to do, then we can stay in Drumheller for lunch, do some hiking trails, more pics or something then head back to Edmonton later that afternoon.
Please make sure your car is in good working order, I don't want to leave anyone stranded on the highway.

This sounds like a great idea, I have not been there in probaly 10 years and I loved it there such a neat bit of land and great for mountain biking and I bet ripping around my RC car too.
I say at this moment I am 75% in, I would like to find a hotel or campin spot to stay at. |

If you plan to actually visit the museum, I wouldn't plan on going to Calgary unless it's for the evening/dinner.
The bf and I went there for Christmas and it took us the entire day to visit the museum. We did go to a reptile museum in Drumheller afterwards though. The drive to Calgary also took extra long because of the construction. Judging from my drive to & from Calgary this past weekend, I'm sure they're still doing construction on everything possible.
Have fun! And maybe take QEII for the first part instead of the secondary highways. They kind of suck. |

I agree. The route I always take is QE2 to Lacombe --> Lacombe to Stettler --> Stettler to Drum. |

JUST as a heads up, I just came back from Drumheller no more than an hour ago, and there is a LOT of fresh oil being applied to the pavement, just north of Drumheller. So be ready to wash your car on arrival, and spending a lot of time getting rid of oil on the sides. Or just try and avoid it.. looking at the map it was literally just north of Drum on 56, prior to 27/9. |

| FYI there were mad RCMP out there last weekend when i came back from leth - drum- edm...especially hwy 9 out of drumheller. There is major construction west of 21 on hwy 9 so be sure to avoid that. |

Just to post up some friendly advice.
The RCMP, Sherrifs are fine with cars cruising down in groups or as a club.
They have issues when there is jackassory, or stupid, dangerous/reckless driving involved. If they get one call on it, they can curb the fun and enthusiasm pretty fast.
I would suggest bringing 2 way radios and having a pre set channel. 1 Channel to chat, and another channel to communicate important messages.

I just want to warn everyone of temperatures for the trip.
Edmonton is supposed to hit a high of 30ºC, Drumheller 32ºC and Calgary 30ºC according to environment Canada. If you have window covers I suggest to bring them (I'm currently looking for mine). Bring lots of water/beverages! |

The cruise was pretty fun... never driving in Calgary before, I can say I really disliked it. Almost got into an accident changing lanes so that I could go the right way to get onto the deerfoot.
Going from Sherwood Park to Stettler was probably the best part of the driving. Don't know how I got worse gas mileage than Cheverz :dunno: As soon as we had hit Drumheller I had to have the defrost going again.. mad:
Heading to Calgary wasn't that bad either but there was a lot more traffic to deal with and Jason and myself ran into overheating issues going through the town of Stratmore.
Peter's was awesome. Definitely will be going there the next time I'm in Calgary. I left the group with my cousin at about 4. Around Bowden I had to find a rest stop and take a walk around... I was (and still am) dead tired. After that I hit the Petro-Can in Red Deer... as soon as I got onto the highway overheating issues hit once again. It wouldn't cool down so I pulled over and stopped for about 10 minutes.
I kept scaring the shit out of my cousin.. I told him he wasn't allowed to sleep because I couldn't. Everytime he started to doze off I would slow down a bit and hit the gas and that got him awake quickly both times I did it to him..
When I have had some more rest I will elaborate on the trip a little more extensively.
I had also suggested over radio that we make this an annual cruise as the drive to Drumheller was awesome. Beautiful country and the museum was fun to see again after being there about 5-6 years prior. :thumbup: |

it was a great time. I also agree, everything but the drive to Calgary from Drumheller was wicked. It was greta to meet you guys and yes we should definitely do this again next year. Hopefully we have a lot more people come with us. I would like to do that 30KM scenic cruise through the badlands and maybe bypass Calgary all together. But we can worry about that for next year.

YYYYaaaaaaaAAAAaawwwwWWWNNnn...I was sleepy and still am, man was I ever pleazed with that part of the trip and the fact that I have not been to drumheller for a good long time, i think since I was 14.
The wide open big feild on the way to cow town was nice and so was my small fries, unlike you guys that wanted the bag, freakin glutenins.
Ya after I left there I got a nice room at the ramada, had a couple of beers at the alcove sports bar, woke up at 5am then today being sunday I went to lac louise and did that tourest thing up to saskachewan crossing up hiway 11A to rocky MT House and I forgot how dam nice the koonney plans and that very huge very blue green lake.
I drove my car way out were the lake is supose to be but it seems kinda low but it was nice, sorta like a weird desert area and the drive thru the mountians was great.
Gas $38start,Calgary $45,sask crossing top off $20 1140km since yestarday, No over heating issuse or even tweak of anything...suckers!!! :thumbup: :beer:
