| If anyone here can enlighten me on why this is, the way it is. Ive heard so many different reasons in why it is or isnt legal. Is tint on the front windows legal? And if not, why? |

Any window in front or directly adjacent to the driver CAN NOT BE TINTED ANY PERCENTAGE according to the law.
Why? Because Ralph Klein SAYS SO! I have heard a few reason's myself but it is a moot point, what's illegal is illegal, unless you wanna get a quarter million signatures on a petition to try and change the law there is no sense bitching or questioning it.
There are a lot of tint shops that will do it for you but you pays your money, you take's your chances, it isn't there fault if you get pulled over. |

| It's illegal because, if you get pulled over by a cop, and he walks up to your car, he wants to be able to see that you're not pulling a gun on him behind tinted windows. |

Sorry - but if this is the reason then any cop stupid enough to walk up to a car with rolled up tinted windows deserves to get shot!
Whats stopping me from having a gun pointed through the door below the window level and then raising it up just as he arrives? (Not that I own a gun or would shoot anyone!) My point is that this is a stupid reason. NEXT?
Another reason I have heard is that then they can't make eye contact with the driver. So now is it going to be illegal to wear sunglasses while driving?
How about this one - they can't tell who is in the vehicle or how many people when they pull you over. If this was a legit reason then why is it ok to tint or even paint right over your back windows?
I don't know why the law makers can't see the benefits of window tinting like less driver fatigue due to sun glare, or people not being blinded by the sun and running into other people.
This is quite obviously another cash cow and another way to get at sport compact drivers. It has absolutely nothing to do with safety!
(This is all assuming of course that the tint isn't so dark that you can't even see out of it. I think that limo tint on the front windows is unsafe because it impairs the drivers vision at night. A light tint however is no problem and can actually help at night too with headlight glare!)
End Rant!! |

I didn't think they're would be too legit an answer, or one for that matter, regarding this issue.
I do feel that it could benefit for sun glare, but i think they should rethink it and allow a certain percentage. Not neccesarily a darkness percentage but maybe coverage percentage. Based on a square or rectangular figure maybe allow for 50% or something just to throw a number out there.
It's not a life threatening addition to my beast but would (I feel) slightly enhance the appearance to match future plans of body and paint work.
Thanks for the comments guys.

Here is a good list.
#1 Applying any glaze to a window reduces its fracture capability. Meaning auto glas is designed to shatter in to thousands of very tiny peices, so you wont get stabbed or sliced by these peices to a point of death. If you apply a glaze this will prevent the window from doing its "job"
#2 is safety....People driving or crossing the street cant see your eyes. You need to make eye contact with others while driving to let them know you are watching and paying attention.
#3 is cops.. blah blah, shot....blah... Dont pull me over no problems blah blah.. gun issue blah blah, people in car blah blah....blah cant see faces if checking at car stop blah the usual here.
DO i have my windooooss tinted. Hell ya. 35% on front (been pulled over for this, only by RC tho) and 15% on back.

Does this mean you got a ticket or did the rc let you off with a warning? If you did get a ticket what was the approx cost? What did the rc say regarding the issue when it happened? |

Here's my 2 cents. Whenever I see a super dark tint on all windows, to me it looks dumb and suspicious. I'm sure a cop would assume it's a gangsta ride.
Also if it's illegal to tint the front then how come I see cars that are tinted very dark on all windows all the time. Are they risking tix? |

yup. 35% on the front doors tends to be the best, I've known people that got mad tickets when they had their doors blacked with 17%, but when they switched to 35% they didnt get botherd anymore.
Theres also a 54% solargard tint, it will give you a nice look (if your rears are dark) but also at 54% your chances of getting a ticket are slim. |

"Sorry - but if this is the reason then any cop stupid enough to walk up to a car with rolled up tinted windows deserves to get shot!"
-Whats a cop supposed to do? Pull out his gun behind any car with tinted windows and demand they roll down the window before he gets any closer?Put yourself in a cops shoes.
"How about this one - they can't tell who is in the vehicle or how many people when they pull you over. If this was a legit reason then why is it ok to tint or even paint right over your back windows?"
-From my understand it is ILLEGAl to paint your back window, I beleive the law is that if your vehicle comes with a rear veiw mirror it must be able to work. So cube vans, semi's, etc are exempt.
"This is quite obviously another cash cow and another way to get at sport compact drivers. It has absolutely nothing to do with safety!"
-This is not a cash cow. Photo radar is a cash cow. I don't think when this law was passed anyone was thinking "heres a good way to get back at all those sport compact owners". Sure cops may use it to be dinks if they have nothing else on a guy, but laws don't get passed to simply "get back" at, for the most part, regular people. It has everything to do with safety, read darkrid3rs list. |

Thats all i would ask for and can only expect with enough people working on something, they cant get away with a stupid reason like that. DB240 your right about the radar being a total cash cow. Ive seen so many "cops" sleeping behind the wheel of those. Ive heard they have to mark everyone that get a flash as to not be able to sleep but i know some of them were, maybe just good fakers?
I do understand from the cops point of view about not always knowing whats there behind the tint, but like i said earlier maybe some kind of percentage thing could work? :dunno: |

| People manning the photo radars are not cops, they are civil employees. But I am torn between tint, yes its illegal, but my car looks so good with the windows up and with the black rag top. As well as that It kinda keeps prying eyes out as well i think. But th eextra heat from the police sometimes is nto worth it. |

| DeathBy240 |
| The previous owner of my car had all the windows tinted, I ripped it all off, I think it looked messy, and all black car with tint that wasnt quite black. Looks much cleaner now. |

| i have got a ticket for it but meh i won't take it off... it just makes the car look so much better.. IMO |

I agree it does help keep prying eyes out aswell. Having a vehicle done up is kinda heat score for that stuff anyway but at least tint doesnt let them see what exactly you have.
And mwdguy notice the "cops" from my last statement chosen for that reason, i heard they werent actual police offficers.
Jay how much was the ticket? Small price to pay?
My brother used to have a 2000 Golf VR6 with front window tint and the cop that pulled him over made him remove it on the spot, or offered a tow service to have it done at a later date. |

| Well, if I was a cop, I wouldn't want to walk up to a car on a deserted highway where I couldn't clearly see what the people inside were doing. However, I do have my front two windows tinted. Very little though, so cops can still clearly see everything in the car. I've never yet had a tinted window ticket in 8 years of driving with tinted windows. |

My personal encounter with the RC was in banff and previous to the may 5th ticket increase.
He did let me off, most likely because i was with my wife at the time. It was 69 dollars back then but it is now 115.

I know an RC quite well so I asked him about the tint. He told me that at night time, during a traffic stop, a flashlight beam will reflect horribly off the tint making it impossible to see into the vehicle and creating a potentially dangerous situation to an officer.
Plus, with all the new metallized tints availiable, the reflection is even worse.
I have tint on my car; 15% in the back and 20% in front. It looks good, so I keep it. Whenever I get pulled over, I simply roll the windows down. The cops won't get quite as pissed off if they don't have to give the glass a tap to get your attention... |

I intend on getting my windows tinted, somthing like 35 front and 15 back,
good point above, if you get pulle dover, roll down the window.
As well a reason for tint to be illegal at least if it's blacked out in the front, the gun reason is valid, the flashlight reflection is good, but no one has mentione dseat belts. If your windows are blacked out cops can't se if your wearing your seatbelt or not.

I've always thought this point is stupid.
Whenever I'm pulled over by police, my windows are down and my hands are on the steering wheel where everything's visible before the officer is even out of his car. So tint or not, it should be totally irrelevant. I can't imagine anyone intentionally wanting to hide behind super dark tint and wait for the officer to come over and ask him to roll his window down. That's just asking for trouble. |
