Did anyone else go?
It rocked, it killed, it was probably the best concert Edmonton will see all year!
After a 25 year hiatus from our city, and all the original line-up intact, and a setlist full of all their top tracks from their 80s golden age, how could you go wrong.
Oh, and EVERY band needs a frontman like Bruce Dickenson! :bowdown: |

| I didn't go... But I heard the volume was kind of low? |

As opposed to most concerts that are WAY TOO LOUD? :dunno: Depends on your perspective I guess.
I'm not sure, as I was wearing ear plugs again for most of it. But the times that I took the plugs out, it seemed like a much more reasonable volume overall with much less distortion/feedback.
I think the sound guys did a good job personally. |

Iron Maiden, with Lauren Harris
Where: Rexall Place
When: Last night
EDMONTON - Sweet metal gods, what hath thou wrought?
Could it be that in Iron Maiden you have created a band that cannot be defeated by conventional means? It sure looks that way - last night's sold out show proved that the now 33-year-old New Wave of British Heavy Metal band can still duke it out with the young upstarts, just as much as with their constant nemesis/mascot Eddie. With 13,800 fists pumping away in unison - an impressive sight - raw throated audience voices singing along to most every word, the cartoonishly energized six-piece blew through nearly two hours worth of material and left the Rexall Place audience screaming for more.
Front man Bruce Dickinson was unflagging in energy, bounding across the stage, over monitors, prowling on top of the set waving a Union Jack; he boasted as many costume changes as Diana Ross at the Jubilee Auditorium three weeks ago. There were strong Broadway vibes coming from his florid hand gestures and stiff legged stances - even a little Elvis contained in his back to the audience drum riser move, where he playfully socked his fists in rhythm to drummer Nicko McBrain, as though he was preparing for the final round of the Operatic Metal Singers Championship against Judas Priests' Rob Halford. Dickinson is still able to hit those notes, by the way - and rising above a din of three guitars squalling over bass and drums is no easy feat, especially at Rexall.
The band certainly weren't slouches either - the three guitar attack was focused and methodical, McBrain and bassist Steve Harris the dictionary definition of solid. There was little fat to be found on these songs, even with many averaging close to ten minutes in length. There were explosions - lots of explosions, actually - spumes of fire and bursts of fireworks, and a constantly evolving back drop representing the album each song came from. The set drew across a fair span of those albums, with an emphasis on expected "hits" - the popular Number of the Beast and Run to the Hills, Can I Please Play With Madness, and Powerslave, which had Dickinson donning a ridiculous face mask equal parts bondage gear and 18th century French aristocratic dandy wear.
The band encored with Moonchild, after which they launched into The Clairvoyant, during which a giant cyborg Eddie lumbered on stage, laser gun at ready, only to be fought off by - and it really doesn't get much better than this - an electric guitar counter attack. Top that, Neil Diamond!

| I was actually surprised they didn't come out for a second encore... the crowd sure was loud and sustained for quite a while after the end. |

i was in a box, it was insane............. all the small towns and trailer parks emptied out for one hell of a head banging fist pumping concert. sound was the best i have ever heard at rexall, and the band was dead on with all their tunes. my first concert ever was powerslave tour back in the 80's. so i was so stoked to relive it. and when the crowd was cheering at the start, they were as loud or louder than the oilers playoff run.
A++++ |
