upgrading suspension. - Click HERE for Original Thread

Cheemoney
so i was looking into it, and i put together some suspension upgrades for my rx7. the rough cost was around $1300 for eibach front/rear sway bars, eibach spring kit, and four bilstein struts. now the second option saves me $50 and swap out the bilstein's for KYB's.

which should i decide on? bilstein's or kyb's?

i have no idea how either of them handle so any feedback would be appreciated. whether by opinions head, experiences or just liking one name over the other.

edit: i double checked the prices and going with the kybs saves me aroud $250 NOT $50.

Bilsteins are a much better quality shock, they aren't adjustable but can be revalved and are a better high performance shock all around.

Kyb(assuming agx's) are adjustable which is nice, but they don''t like stiff springs and don''t like being lowered over an inch I'd say.

I have them on my miata and I track it often(and sucessfully if I do say so myself) so they aren''t a bad shock by any means.

If you can buy the Bilsteins. You won't regret it.

RotaryJunkie13B
i'd buy the kyb agx's with racing beat handling package( springs and FnR sways)

looking around 1000 bucks said and done.

Cheemoney
so i re-evaluated, and if i got the bilsteins with the springs and sways i wanted off tire rack it'd only be a total of $1195.65 :D . i don't know whether thats american or canadian though, but i don't think it makes that much of a difference since we're sitting at .98CAD to 1USD.

thanks for the input though guys. i know the eibach springs lower the car about 0.8" anyway. but i'm running 14" wheels and there's a huge gap there haha. i'll be looking into some 16" rims later on.

edit: i found the agx's but the site doesn't have the racing beat package so i stapled on the eibach FnR swaybars and pro kit springs and its about $100 more for those.

I have racing beat springs, rb cannon brace and racing beat hollow front swaybar.

Their springs are crap, sways are amazing, and their bracing is of very good quality. If you went with eibach(w/bilsteins) you made the right choice. Kyb agxs are weaksauce compared to bilsteins.

do you think the eibach sways will be any good? i was suprised to hear they made struts now too.. but that may be old news for most of you.

Don't know about eibach sways, prolly ok, but the real question I should have asked is what is your plans for the car?? Daily driver? Track? Autocross?

Dean

can i say all of the above? its a daily driver now, but i wanna up the suspension so i can probably attend an autox or time attack some time. and i don't have a second car so its a definate daily driver.

You'll be fine with the eibach kit then.

Cheemoney
is it hard pulling out the sway bars?

Inzane
I agree with the Bilstein > KYB assessment.

Koni is another good shock brand worth looking into.

The only advantage of KYBs is as already stated: price and ease of adjustability.

That's very car dependant. I've no first hand experience with RX-7s, but generally speaking the more you're willing to unbolt the easier snaking a sway bar in or out becomes. Definitely a DIY job though.

simple job pulling them about 8 bolts and there off

I am fairly impressed with my KYB's and Mazdaspeed springs.

Handles amazingly well with this combination.

Cheemoney
okay, i asked the techs and the senior parts staff at my work. are the mazda speed struts/springs on your rx7's for a different car? because none of them have even heard or seen any mazdaspeed applications for the rx7? like some of these guys have been working at mazda long before i was even born, and i'm 21. so did we miss something?

95IntegraRS
Mazdaspeed are essentially Eibach's. Mazdaspeed suspension is made by Eibach.

95IntegraRS
And also, never ask about performance equipment at a dealership.

Cheemoney
ahhhhh okay. that makes more sense. one of the journeyman said that they probably got some other company (he said koni as an example) was making the struts for mazdaspeed etc... okay that makes more sense. i think i'll stick with the bilsteins though.

95IntegraRS
Koni does make the shocks for Mazdspeed and RE Amemiya's older schoo coilovers.

I would stick with the Bilstein's but get some Eibach springs or something with a reasonable spring rate. Don't get 14K/14K springs, car will ride like a shit bucket.

Cheemoney
i'm getting an eibach pro kit for springs and a FnR sway kit as well to go with the bilsteins. but they don't have the springs weight or rating.
