Praying-Mantises? - Click HERE for Original Thread

anschutz_93
Has anyone bought these creepy things for their yard? Apparently they survive well up here, and will multiply until they overpopulate and kill each other. A yard full of praying-mantises is probably the closest thing to truly be ballin' since the Rolls Royce!

A lot of the specialty plant/garden stores sell them but I just found out you can buy them at costco really cheap...

Heres the costco link:

http://www.costco.ca/Browse/Product...opnav=&s=1#

I have dogs... they won't attack dogs right???
I have an acerage as well, what would be the consequences of introducing these things to a 1/4 section?

I'm going to order them just for the fuck of it anyways, I'll get some enjoyment out of the Mantis fights!

I just ordered some yesterday. I'm hoping they arrive quickly, cause they are suppose to hatch during the month of June.

They die... but their eggs can take the cold. I imagine you could trap the larger ones and put them in your garage, by the time winter come around you could probably get them off bugs and start them on mice or something :dunno:

BEST THREAD OF 2008!!

Interesting concept.

However, if you want to know some of the effects of introducing foreign predators into new environments, just talk to native Hawaiians.

Hahahha...Everyone on 780 should buy some and lets infest Alberta with these...then sit back and see what effect it has.

If you think these things are creepy just looking at them you should see what the female does when they mate. The female decapitates the male and usually he just keeps on going.

I think putting manti up here would be wicked. they eat bugs and leaves. not like they're gonna fuck up out eco-system. Whats the worse they could do? cure us of the pine/spruce beattle.

JoshP2002
Holy crap, those things are freaky up close.

as for the eco system. If you have enough of them they would. There are flying things called "BIRDS" that eat bugs and many other animals that do. When the praying-mantises takes over, start to say goodbye to some common animals that you see. Then watch the animal food chain from there..That is of course only if you have enough of these things around.

I am going to start breeding Pterodactyls as a form of population control.

I'll deal with some flies and mosquitos before having to see these bastards while I'm having a BBQ in the back yard,

But dude... its biting its head off and it looks like an alien!

They will probably just assume the roll of spiders in the ecosystem, that is after they eat them all hopefully. Spiders>mantis in scariness, I don't like spiders :(

They are actually very cool. They have them all over hawaii and when we where there we would catch them all the time. We caught a baby one and my wife had it sitting on her knee. She would rock back and forth and the the little guy would mimic her and start rocking back and forth as well....it was pretty cool.

Mantis fighting is a good idea too.

I was really tempted to order some but it's too late in the year now. Oh well, there's always next year!
