An interesting read........

Under the current legislation, a teenager caught downloading five copyrighted movies in her parents' basement could be liable for up to $100,000 in fines, Mr. Prentice said. Under the proposed law, the maximum fine they could incur is $500.

However, if that teenager were to burn those movies to DVDs and begin selling them on the street, she would be subject to fines or prosecution if caught.

Awesome.

DO NOT WANT!!!!

Made in Canada my ass, it was the fucking RIAA and the MPAA that pushed this lame-assed shit on us. Fucking useless greedy americans!

So much for Fair Use! Now we won't be allowed to legally back up our store bought media because that would require bypassing the digital locks. So instead of keeping all my store bought media in an easy to use format on my network, no no of course not, I have to keep my thousands of titles in disk form...

Forget downloading, the ISP's have been told to toe the line or else. (Read ACTA)

Link to Michael Geists take on the Canadian DMCA He says it worse than the one the americans have!!!

FUCK THE RIAA

FUCK THE MPAA

Bullshit! I copy ALL my dvd's to the server for point and click watching from any room in our house.. Same for my music cd's. That will now be illegal as you have to bypass the digital locks on the disks.

I buy my movies, from the flea market new or used, NEVER ripped copies (even though I have seen them for sale), used from buysell or kijiji, use shrink on them then stuff them on the server, I like good sound and crisp picture. My hubby, well he downloads, mostly stuff that can't be found on the flea market tables or in the stores.

Almost all the music I have was bought, in the form of buying used computers from buysell and having them be fully loaded with music. The rest comes from buying the cd's, ripping them then making mixed mp3 cd's for the car. The last cd I bought was Maroon 5, the one before that was Gwen Stephani's latest steaming turd..

I also download cracked copies or cracks for games that I own. So I don't have to go digging in the media room for a title whenever I want to play a game just because of draconian DRM forcing me to "INSERT DISK". I don't have a single game file for any game I don't already own and have receipts for.

To rip a dvd to play on my Personal Media Player/computer will now cost me $20,000 if I am caught.

So as I stated before... So much for Fair Use.

Oh yeah, that nice unlocked iPhone would also be punishable by a $20,000 fine.... You have to bypass the digital locks to unlock an iPhone or any other cell phone.

*EDIT*
I'm 32, not 12. I have music and movies in my library going back to when they still came on vinyl and tape. Way back in the day I copied every single dvd and cd the local library had on file, not legal in the usa but legal here up untill now. I also copied everything my friends had, either by directly copying their stuff from cd's (way back in the day) or by going to LAN parties.

How will that work BTW? If you copy stuff from friends at a LAN party, you won't be breaking any DRM yet you'll have a drive full of media... How will they police that?

I didn't realize inserting a disk was such an inconvenience. :dunno:

Although... I will admit that having an iPod (I'm a recent convert) is so damn nice.

It is when you run a multi-game gaming clan or you have as many games as I do. That and it trashes the disks after awhile, I like to keep my originals in pristine condition. My BF2 disk is all scratched to hell because I couldn't use a crack on it. Used it everyday for 3 years, took really good care of it yet it still ends up scratched.

My FarCry disk lasted me 3 years till the cat knocked it off my desk and I rolled over it with my chair..... Again, if I could have cracked it and not been blacklisted for it I would still have that disk... as it would have been locked away collecting dust till I needed to reinstall.

My point is, we, the consumers are being treated like criminals for doing whatever we want to with our bought and paid for media/phones.

I never bought into the whole iPod thing...

They are even trying to say that downloading pictures without the copyright owners consent will also be a $500 fine! $20K if you share it with someone! Pictures!!!

This is all just way to out there to pass. Minority govt? No way.

I'm with JeepGirl on this, do not want!

Jim Prentice more than likely received a nice big fat fucking donation to his party by some media giant's lobbyist. That's the reason this is being pushed. There was no public consultation here.

Keep in mind folks that this bill is the first step to the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. Next time you’re traveling back into Canada with your laptop how would you like to have it confiscated while someone digs through all your personal files looking for copyright material?

Agree with everything else you've said but especially this point.. does anyone remember how the MPAA et al tried to ensure that VHS devices didn't have a record feature? Look at what that's done to the industry..

Also thanks for beating me to it on posting a link to Michael Geist.

Anyone who things this is a good thing should look up Lawrence Lessig as well as Geist.. the problems with american style DRM have been well documented. This what happens when special-interest groups are allowed to formulate (and dominate) policy discussions in a supposedly democratic system.

I agree with everything that has been said here.

Now lets put this into perspective. With our privacy laws and regulations, do you think there is really a hope of having this actually enforced or monitored? I think not.

Me no want either... My wife buys movies, she rips them to her Ipod video, I rip them to my file server. we watch movies on 4 or 5 possible computers. I still use a laundry mat as I figure currently it's cheaper.. but I like to grab a couple movie ISO's off the file server, dump them on my laptop and go watch movies while doing laundry... I have a DVD system in my truck.. I'd rather bring copies into the truck, so if I forget them they don't get destroyed by the heat.

My wife plays alot of games as well, and rather than carrying around a number of binders full of CDs, she ripped them all to ISO and carried around an external harddrive to lanparties, and considering she has 6 computers, she plays multiple games at the same time, and uses different computers for different games she shares that drive across our network.

As far as the border crossing thing.. I'll need a court order to permit that, even then good luck. I have lawyers and family services companies as clients and I had some of there data on my laptop/server which is confidential.. even then my drive is encrypted - they ain't gettign my password nor my fingers.

But not for watching movies WHILE you're driving of course, right? ;)

JeepGirl
Monitoring is easy, all the hardware is already in place. ACTA will force ISP's to monitor all traffic and record/report the "pirates" AKA Your Mom when she is downloading recipes illegally, little brother when he is downloading porn, Auntie Dirtypillows downloading her Y&R or Harliquinne romances, Grandpa Jack when he downloads the user manual for his chainsaw from a copy-righted source or YOU when you unlock your iPhone/LG/whatever..

Enforcement will be another matter.... Just imagine how plugged the courts will be when citizens of Canada all take their cases to trial.... It will end up like BC's way of dealing with simple possession of pot - they will turn a blind eye because it costs to much tax payer money to take to trial so many victimless cases.

I don't see this flying anytime soon, I'm just sick that it got as far as it did already...

Hit up your MP's people, make some noise!!! Or don't bother complaining when something like this does eventually pass because you sat there quiet. Don't just e-mail them, they don't read their e-mail, someone else does, fire up your printer, put pen to paper, buy some stamps and mail your MP's with your angst over draconian american corporate DRM/Anti-fair use schemes coming to Canada.

I have and I continue to do so.

You aint gettin that machine back either!! Ha Ha! The jokes on you... cuz they will just confiscate it... People have been waiting upwards of four years to get their electronics back after having tried the same tack with border/customs agents..

Airports, train stations and border crossings, it doesn't matter, and they just stepped up the rules for searching electronics at these locations.. I'll have to go look them up again but basically say buhbye to your lappy/iPhone/mp3 player should you wish to cross into the usa WITHOUT allowing border agents access to your gear, or you could keep your gear and go home. Those are your options. I'm not sure how it works coming back to the Canadian side..

SilverNeonRacer
I know of a law firm that has a clean install of windows on the machines their staff use to cross the border, then they just download their files over VPN later...

I started a thread about this issue a while ago the border/data issue thing.

I also have a secure memory key, that is biometric only, no password, so they can take it, won't do them anygood.

I've also heard stories of people mailing their harddrive/thumbdrive/SD card to their destination to avoid this issue...

I haven't heard the 4 years to get it back.. 4 months... yes.. they just started doing this.. I was in Florida via plane last fall.. 50% of the people going through security had laptops, none of us had to turn them on, we just had to take them out of the carring bag to put them through the X-ray machine.
