how often do you guys hit redline? - Click HERE for Original Thread

2000silverimpreza
how often you guys hit redline in your car? once a day? twice a day? once a week?

for me on average is once a day.

VR666
Only when I'm racing. <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo-->

When I race or practice drifting!  <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->  <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->  <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

Well, for me, the better question would be: when don't I??... I'm always practicing...

wong
With my dad's Jag,  all the time.

When I get my car, I'll baby it.

Actually is hitting redline a bad thing???

BlueTurboEGG
Well, the redline is the Manufacturers "recommended" shift point <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

We all know better...

Hitting the redline is ok. If you bounce of the rev limiter it's still ok. Just don't cruise like that. The manufacture should know what's best for your motor. I'm not sure about the other car companies but as for honda's, one of the reasons for the rev limiter is because not as much power is being produced at those revs. The other is that the valve springs are not meant to handle those revs. There are other chained reasons but that should be general.  <!--emo&:0--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':0'><!--endemo-->

i heard its good to bring the engine to higher rpm's once in awhile because it helps clear out some of the carbon buildup or something like that. i'm not sure if its true or just some old myth.

BlueTurboEGG
Yeah, I hear that too, but when I try it, I do feel a bit of difference by SOP...

My guess is that when you do the "drive to the corner store" your engine doesn't get to build enough temperature to burn off all of those carbon deposits that pile up in short term driving.

Kinda like clearing your throat of plegm <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

VR666
It is recommended that you drive the car hard once in a while.  Reving the engine to red line doesn't mean it is running hard or hot.  Putting a load on the engine however will get it to run hotter (still within the limits), things such as climbing a hill or racing will get the engine hot.

RX7 guys  should know more about driving their cars hard once in a while.  Hey Loose what are your opinions?

BlueTurboEGG
Like driving it on a highway for a few minutes.

But listen to VR666 here kids, don't overheat your car <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

a few minutes on the highway should be enough to clear out the car.

CYA
just pull off a vacuum line and use a few drops of water at a time to clear out carbon.

RX_AGENT
Well, as an RX7 owner, I was advised to give it some redline to clear up carbon buildup.  Carbon buildup within the engine chamber can eventually ripoff the apex seals on the rotor(s) and send you to the engine rebuild shop.  So I'd be weary about buying an RX-7 that was 'babied'.

Loose, is this right?

Not to fret guys, motor #3 is in the car and awaiting break in.

Hmmm S02's in the winter...:)

2000silverimpreza
i heard about the few drops of water idea that CYA us talking about. the water steam cleans your engine.

BlueTurboEGG
So you can use any vacuum hose?

2000silverimpreza
i don't know if i would do it or not. its probably different on every car but on my intake manifold there are a few vacuum hose all going to different intake runners. if you put a few drops of water into the vacuum hose wouldn't it only clean that cylinder its connected to? i don't know if i want to try putting water into my engine. i'm scared it might hydrolock, then you'll be needing a new engine <!--emo&:0--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':0'><!--endemo-->

BlueTurboEGG
Yeah, I think I'd like to hear more on this "Water in the vacuum lines" trick...

CYA
if your vacuum hoses are connected to each intake runner as opposed to the plenum then yes you will only clean that cylinder. _find another vacuum hose. _simple as that. _as for being scared of too much water... just use common sense. _put a few drops on a teaspoon and let the vacuum suck it up. _don't be pouring glasses of water in there and you're fine.
