Good places to do a mountain bike tune up? - Click HERE for Original Thread

GOT BOOST
I have decided to get off my fat lazy ass and do some biking.

Where is a good place to take a bike to be tuned up for a good price?

The bike is brand new. After fighting with Sport mart 2 years ago for a new bike under warranty, these schmucks did not put my new one together correctly. I have not rode it since I picked it up.

Anyways,

Where are a few good shops I can take my bike to with out spending a small booty.

Seriously?

You can rip apart a supra but you can't re-assemble a bicycle?

I do not know if it was all with in spec or not. I do not have the time nor the interest to do it.

I have 1,974,587 projects lined up for this summer. If I can farm this one out then I am a happy camper. :D

i would recommand Red Bike just off 109st and by the high level
really great people and very helpful for anything
i've been going there for over 5 years now and never had a bad experience

velocity cycle, but I used to ride for them so I'm a little biased :dunno:

Any actual bike shop in Edmonton would do good work. I've always been a fan of Hardcore. I think it's about $100 to get a major tune up, which is pretty comprehensive.

I would say bring it by the St Albert Sport Mart for a free tune up by me, I have been riding somewhat avidly since 14, and have been a tech there for the last 5 years (21 now), as well a management, sales etc. But I only work saturdays since I have a real job, and just do this because i have a passion for working in the tech shop, so it would only get done on saturdays. Plus it seems like you are quite unhappy with sport mart right now.

On a side note, What bike is it that you bought, which sport mart have you been dealing with? Just because I would like to forward this info to some people so that the problem store can be dealt with and a similar situation avoided in the future. Since with the bikes as long as it hasnt been abused everything is covered by warranty except tube and tire. and with our store if an issue hasnt been dealt with after a few times, depending on how long you have owned the bike, a refund, store credit, or replacement bike is in order.

Jordan, how much for a tune up on a couple nakurama(sp?) mountain bikes? One is a couple years old, almost never riden, the other is pushing 10 years old, twas stolen Christmas one year, found it in the bushes almost 15mo later.. rode it some more

This is the sportmart on Calgary Trail and 48ave ish. I purchased the bike 2 years ago. To make a long story short, I had to tighten up and install some stuff when I first purchased it, it reflectors, handle bars, etc. I brought it back a few weeks later after I could no longer move the pedals. It took them 3 weeks to even get a reply after they told me it would be looked at with in a few days. After they looked at it, they told me they would give me a brand new one. Took them 1.5 weeks to assemble it. When I picked it up, the front and rear reflectors were falling off and the handle brakes and gear shifters were pointed to the sky. It made it difficult to ride if you know what I mean. At that point I said fuck it, these guys can not get it right and put the bike away to look at it later. I had managed to align the handle bars, gear shift, and handle brakes.

I would rather die before I purchase another bike from that sport mart location.

If you want I can bring it by on this Saturday for you to take a look at

The model is an Orange Columbia XCO, 6061 Aluminum 17.5"

If you want give me a time you would like to drop it off and I will meet you there and look at it when you drop it off hopefully have it back within the hour type thing.

As for a tune up standard tune up is $50 for a tune that goes over brakes shifters deraileurs cables casings etc. if I deem it isnt a pain in the ass to work on I will do it for $35, of course this does not include parts.

Sure. What time do you start. I can be there first thing.

I am in no rush for the bike. It sat in my Garage since I received the exchange it with out it being rode except for 2 or 3 kms.

Mike, I called about 3-4 different bike shops on Whyte Ave and the South side and most charge around $80-$85 for a basic tune up.

My bike is due for one as well. Only thing you should keep in mind is that they are all usually backed up by about 3-5 days.

And Rob, working on a bike is actually quite complex and requires many specialized tools.

Thanks for the info Jamie.

I am not in a rush to get it back. So 1-2 weeks is not bad. Perhaps we could do the great 780tuner bike run and drop out bikes off at Jordan's sport mart. I have lots of room in my pick up. :D

I still have a million things I want to do. However I would like to start biking more in a few weeks. :D

Yea my hand is starting to heal up nicely and I should be able to bike very soon. What kind of biking do you do? I'm mostly into trail riding...not a big pavement cyclist.

Let me know, sometime we can get together...I know a few guys that go out regularly too.

Good to hear the hand is coming along.

Those bagel injuries can take a while to heal.

As for the type of riding that I do. In the past I have done mostly pavement, and some trail riding in the river valley. I am looking to get more into the river valley trail riding, but nothing hardcore.

you pick the time, I am only going to stop by for a couple hours, I make my own shifts there. I am only going to look at a few bikes and go home to do the brakes on my scooby hopefully. Store hours are 9:30 to 6 I think so any time before 10 and 4 is good for me. And it should be done that day unless there are parts needed which I doubt since the bike is basically new, and the components that came on the xco are of a decent quality and fairly easy to tune.

Sounds good. I can easily do 9:30 am or earlier. I was prepared to do 7:00 am. So 9:30 is fine by me.

I will drop it off then head out to Kar Bahers to see if I can find a wheel hub for my car. I can easily be back before 4:00 pm or earlier.

I appreciate it.

jordanturbo
sounds good, I will prob be in 10 or 11
