Friday and Saturday nights, there is more often than not a bunch of idiots who seem to want to use the street near my house to drag race on.
My wife has called in complaints, however it's no use in calling it in when it happens, they run maybe twice or so, then they're gone for a while, then they (or maybe someone else) is back a couple hours later.
If I were to get license plate numbers, could something be done about these idiots? |

| If you are willing to write a statement and go to court you can go down to the station and make a complaint.... |
|
|
| Ruiner |
filing complaints will result in retaliations on your property and possessions.
instead get a few 2x4s, and a shitload of nails...
create your own spikeboard, wait for them to start racing, hide in the bushes and throw it out when they're making their run.
laugh, then grab the spikeboard, putting it away for future use. |

Dan,
I knew installing the 7MGTE in the NA was a bad idea. Leave the poor neon's alone. You will never win! |

Here's the plan.
Go buy a 88 civic rust bucket. Drop a cheap b18 in there and add nitrous. Race one for pinks and take his car.. Theenn.. put the nitrous on his car and race the others for pinks.. Do this till you own all their cars. Then they wont race and you'll have alot of cars. Gimme one for the idea..
Or.. call it in to the cops repeatedly until then do somethin. Hace the neighbours call it in too. |

Maybe just go tell them to fuck off, politely, and tell them it stops or the cops will be involved.
Seems simple, they come back you citizen arrest a motherfucker until the cops come..
Maybe get some video evidence. |

Not like it's that hard to find out.
The street in question is 69 Ave, west of 184 St.
I'd rather NOT lay charges. I mean it'd be a pain to have to go to court and all, and of course the threat of retaliation is also something that has not escaped me.
@GOT_BOOST: yeah yeah. Actually, most of the cars that I've seen are Civics and Accords. There's also the occasional sport bike match-up (Particularly annoying at 2:00 AM when I'm trying to sleep.) |

heres what i did.
just go out when they usually come with a camera with flash. Hide somewhere and as they pass by hit the flash and the next thing you will see is brake lights. usually they wont come back for awhile. and if they do then you take the lumber and nails suggestion. but if you want a combo of the ideas you can sit in the bush with a camera, reflective vest, hair dryer and a piece of lumber with nails in it, and use whatever method fits your mood. |

Rent a 5-ton from U-haul or Budget and just wait until these fuckers start to race and then pull out from a side street right in front of them.
The truck will always win and when the cops see 200+ ft of skid marks, your story about them speeding will stick pretty easy. Hell I'll even drive one of my trucks just to watch some of these idiots wreck their cars. |

I'm sure all of us quietly driving imports will really appreciate the friendly police and political attention after a big media display of "import racing". |

| The best way to deal with your problem is to just wear foam ear plugs when you sleep. It really deafens any noise. And another bonus of the ear plugs is it prevent some of those little bed bugs from getting in your ears. |

might be more of a crackdown on ricers being pulled over and such.. maybe it would be a good thing, then a cop could sit there for awhile, pull these punks over. If you Eliminate the trouble makers, and the rest will be left alone, ignore the problem, everyone gets blamed.
I am starting to prefer the painball gun and marbles suggestion, most fun and entertaining.. and street ricers getting marbled would be an awesome sight. |
|
|

That's why not to go to the media. Every import driver with a speeding ticket will now be blamed as "one of the trouble makers" and have their car crushed for street racing, like the politicians are trying to do in toronto and california and vancouver and wherever else "import street racing" has hit the media bigtime.
Keep bugging the cops, maybe even send them a couple pictures or videos. But don't through everyone under the media bus! |

Wouldnt bother me much, ALL import drivers would slow down and drive properly until the heat is off.
Maybe thats what Edmonton needs. |

Political heat that changes the law means the heat is never off.
It would be a huge waste of resources to focus on imports because this one guy got pissed off at racing in his neighborhood. It's not like domestic drivers, kids in daddy's station wagon, or drunk middle aged men aren't just as dangerous, the drunks being like 10000 times more of a problem then a couple guys being stupid in civics.
Shit, even guys in jacked up trucks drive dangerously. You think we need special media and political heat for them too? Or maybe we could make efficient use of the resources at our disposal instead of targeting an inaccurate stereotype. |

i think we need more crackdowns on the fucking redneck dodge/chev/ford diesel pickups jacked up and have there exhausts straight piped and right next to your window. there more of those things then there is ricers in edmonton and there always fucking making dust clouds 100`s of feet behind them just fucking given her...i dont get whats so much fun about filling 100 bucks in gas every 2 days fuck what a waste of money. |
|
|
| Ruiner |
thats the oilfields for you, most of those jacked up redneck truck owning assholes are driving those trucks to the rigs, which is what Alberta is known for.
Straightpipes and 90's are two different things but I've heard worse noise coming off the back of some riced civic with a 6" coffeecan., but jacked up and pointing right at someones car, with their window open and gunning it, can be nasty.. avoidance is to close your window, or dont lower your car..
Diesels, yes, those who drive them and just launch off the line leaving a cloud of black smoke are annoying, but so are those rice burners who try to launch off the line smoking their rubber, trying to show off to their little tart girlfriend, or in some cases their boyfriend, just to make them feel better about themselves.
Let me make this part very clear: SOME Import car owners are classified as rich little brats who have their cars bought for them by mommy and daddy and dont give two shits about the maintenance, care, or even the damage possibly endured on the car, should be the main target, however since you also drive an import car, you've been unavoidably grouped into the same category, and the only way you really can keep yourself out of it is to drive like a normal person who obeys the laws of the road, and not changing lanes constantly without signaling just trying to move through traffic likes its their own personal slalom.
Those who deserve to be pulled over are, those who have yet to be pulled over, will soon have their turn. |

Didn't get plates, but the last pair that I saw square off on the avenue were a Cavalier and a Neon. Neither is an import, but both were pretty ricey, and very loud.
It really doesn't matter who's doing it. I know that some bikes run out there, and a few pickup trucks too.
@Tech2: Y'know, I did mention that I saw a lot of Civics and Accords, but you still jumped to the conclusion that it'd be imports that got focused on. I could get a pretty good sample of everything from old muscle to pickup trucks to bikes to, yes, imports if I were to collect video over the course of a week.
Unfortunately, I have to do things like sleep and work, or I'd do exactly that. |
|

Yeah, I did jump on the import section of ricers when street racing really does deal with a nice cross section of car types, as you have a great example of. Now I'm totally down with no street racing, and I'm also totally down with not hearing ricers pretend they're the shiznit. What my concern is has to do with the idea of taking this story to the media. Now I could be off base by thinking that imports, ricey or not, would be targeted. It may be that I'm not giving the average non-automotive type public and the politicians who serve them enough credit. They might see the videos on troubleshooter and realize everyone races.
I'm still concerned though about how in other cities where "street racing" became a media issue, it was imports that bore the brunt of law enforcement action. Maybe import drivers really are just too fast and furious, but I sure don't recall anyone calling for anti-street racing enforcement or laws when that middle aged possibly drunk rich corvette owner raced another middle aged rich corvette owner down a public edmonton street, lost control, and killed a teenager. That was just an "accident". Other cities are talking about crushing modified street racing cars... but do they mean 1969 mustangs? If cops in edmonton are told to crackdown on street racers because of a troubleshooter report, are they going to go after muscle cars and diesel trucks? I suppose they could crack down on both domestic and import rice, but what's illegal about making your car stupid?
Now that corvette guy went to jail if I recall correctly, and deserved it. But it wasn't because of media attention, it was just the legal system making use of existing laws. That's all we need here.

I'm glad to see those articles talking about racing and not import racing. I had not seen them before.
Here's part of the second article that gets me worried about stereotypes affecting perception and possibly enforcement and new anti-import laws:
quote: Sherlock said there is a sub-culture in Calgary, fueled by movies and TV shows, that encourages "souping" up cars, usually smaller imports, and racing them on the street.
"It's not that far from the movies, except in the movies, after the crash, those guys dust themselves off and walk away. In real life, you're gone forever," he warned.
Aside from new laws, other steps are being taken to stop racing on streets.
The Alberta Motor Association hopes changes to the Traffic Safety Act will serve as a deterrent.
"If a person is suspected of impaired driving or found to be impaired while driving, their vehicle could be impounded -- seems to me, street racing is every bit as dangerous," said Art Price, regional manager of the AMA for southern Alberta.
They say "usually imports" are racing. Maybe... I dunno about that, the OP's experience is with import, domestics, trucks, and bikes racing in his area. The TV am movies they're talking about I don't think are Bullrun (rally or stupid TV show) or that racing movie with exotic ferraries and koegnizeggs. And while street racing is absolutely dangerous, it's also absolutely NOT as dangerous as impaired driving in terms of infractions, injuries, or deaths. Not even close, and you'd think the AMA manager would know that. If I'm way off correct me, but I don't think the last year saw as many street racing convictions as there were impaired driving ones out of the last checkstop night. So with these other issues already giving import drivers an inaccurate bad reputation, do we need even MORE heat on regular import guys? |
|

The problem with "Stats" is they can be very skewed to state what the writer wishes...
one could say because there was more impaired operation offences then streetracing that it is a bigger problem. However there is a lot more enforcement for impaired operation then street racing.
Street racing is also very hard to prove with current laws
In some ways the Import crowd is the author of it's own misfortune. Movies like F&F are idolized, and constantly quoted.... why else would they have made three of them already. People seem to forget that there was a few domestic cars in there racing.
I would agree the import car groups do not need more negative plubicity... I would rather see attention drawn to Street Legals, Various Drift Events and Forums like 780 that frown upon Street Racing.
Dan_Gyoba, you could always throw a spike belt or slash their tires........ (again being facetious) |

Lol. I already own a minivan, and a high power flash. No worries there.
Aren't there little grey utility box photo radar devices out now? I remember seeing something about that in the papers...
I will never be the person to intentionally damage another person's car, no matter what they're doing with it. So much for the paintball guns, spike belts or 2X4s.
I've noticed that Air One seems to be out in the area at night a few times in the last while. I wonder if it's a coincidence? |
