Construction zones. - Click HERE for Original Thread

So what's the deal with construction zones. Mostly the Quesnell (sp) bridge. The signs say 50 Max. And also the whole Fines Double When Workers Present stuff too.

So when people are passing me doing 90!!!!! I seem to think that the policing in the city is pathetic and I wouldn't want to be a part of it.

This is fucking ridiculous! Why doesn't the city post laser traps there all day when workers are there? You would make thousands upon thousands of dollars... cover your quotas in mere hours. Lol :p

And what is double? The fine, or the amount over the limit?

thats not the point cody.

i can relate to this.

being passed in a construction zone while doing 5 below just because i'm a target for speeding..

it's true this city does need to be policed better.

and dont tell me to sign up, i've already thought about it and was turned down. because for you to even make it on the force you pretty much go threw hell and back then you get paid shit for being treated like shit. i'm really nice to cops and i respect them for what they have to put up with but. Maybe the recruiting part of the job should be a little less strict because many ppl have been failed or wont try because of what they did many years ago.

Bluestreak
I remember just further up when they were fixing the wall along Whitemud near the 159 St exit, they had that speed monitoring thingy with the camera.

That should be on the Quesnell too. I hate it where it says 50 but then everyone is still flying by at 80-90.

Is this a rant or a question?

-The signs say 50 km/h therefore the speed limit is 50 km/h

-Fines double in construction zone when workers are present, therefore, when a worker is working the a speeding fine that would normally be $150 is now worth $300

-Considering this city's police service has not "grown" with the city, (we still have pretty close to the same numbers we had in the 90's) of course there will not be police in every construction zone... that is not the service's fault look to the city who refuses to give the police the funds for more officers.

-No we do not have quotas... we can write as many tickets as we want!

Our hiring standards are now governed by the province... because of that we have seen an increase of applications.

i got passed by a lady and his child today on the way home from work in a 70 zone i was doing close to 80 and the cop behind me didnt do anything. to her.

you can write tickets i can write rants.

The big thing is that it is a known fact that only 15% of people driving through the zones are doing the posted limit. So why not capitalize on that?

It's a mockery of the reason why the law was passed. It was for the safety of the workers, no? It would really suck to be the grunt shoveling hot tar while having bozos buzzing you going 90 kph.

deathwarden5
I got a question. If I'm in a construction zone during the day, when they're actually working, the fine doubles. If I'm there at night, and they're all gone home, is it still doubled? Is it only if there's a worker present, or just construction zones in general?

I was going through the Gateway/23rd construction, going north. I was going about 60. I'll be honest, it's not very often I'll go 50. I saw a copper with his radar pointed at me, so I slow down. I wish I had room to change lanes, cause there was this red-neck SUV speeding up and right on my ass. If I moved he woulda for sure be caught.

I agree 100% my point is simply we can not be everywhere all the time... And yes there has been enforcement in that area, even special duty to show an officer presence to slow things down...

It is very easy to find fault with something... Any one of us can look at some one elses car and find a dosen things wrong it, same could be said for the EPS.

I can say from experiance that 90% of the officers for the EPS care about their job, care doing it right, and care about making this city a better place. We can all relate a bad experiance with the 5.0 however, there is a thread for that, it will NOT be tolerated in this thread or section (minus the rant thread).

little_one_der
Well, I truly thank you for your replies. And I thank you for reading what I had to say.

Ayeso
I wasn't stating it was ok, I always slow down when workers are around as I used to do surveying in bc, and alot of the time i was on the road / close to it so I know what its like to have people blow by you or nearly hit you. I respect construction zones more then most.

But I could just imagine the congestion at some of these locations.

you don't have quotas but the courts can only handle so much paper work  do you all remember what happened when to many photo radar tickets were handed out? The courts got so back logged that they made all of them exempt from a certain date to another date. Something like 3-4 months of tickets were thrown out because the courts just couldn't keep up

Geofux
Don't allow photo radar to even be given the chance to be fought... no one goes into court except if its for 50km/h+ over

problem .... almost.... solved.

AudiInProgress
This section is not for ranting.

JordanJ30A5
I know WHY there's construction on the Quesnell bridge! I did a GPR (ground penetrating radar) survey there, and they're refurbishing the bridge but when they cut, they don't want to cut the support cables they have no accurate diagrams for.

But anyway, yeah people go too fast through the zones for sure.

nothing has changed from what i see. few months ago i was interested in becoming a police officer, but the application is like 100 questions. hell they want to know if i was ever suspended in elementary school.....after looking at the application on the joineps site i dropped that idea in a hurry. im surprised anyone signs up to have to go through all that.

So did you think applying for EPS would be as easy as applying for a retail store? Just fill out an application with your basic information, go to an interview where they ask you about your strengths and weaknesses, and do one reference check? If so, I'm glad you're not on the force. If you are so easily deterred that you decided not to apply due to the written application, then the job's not for you. Police members, in theory, are supposed to be those to uphold and enforce the law. Hells, even if you get a job at a station, they do background check on you, your family, your significant other, and his/her family. (Or so I've been told from someone that went through the process.)

So Blocker, deathwarden 5 asked the question about whether or not the speed limit is still in effect if the construction workers are not around, like at 2 in the morning. Would you be able to answer that? I'm curious. I thought all construction signs were supposed to be brought down when the site is shut down for the day. Thanks!

i just find the application a little over the top. thats all. i was just looking for something to go into since ive been out of school for awhile and a police officer sounded like something i would be interested in. But ya your right, It would take a month or 2 to fully complete everything, and if i wanted it bad enough I could probably do it, but the application is nothing like ive ever seen before for applying to a job. I guess you want to make sure your getting the right people though.

BLOCKER
If it is posted at 50 km/h then it is 50 even if there are no workers present... Sometimes due to the nature of the construction the signs are left up to keep speeds down.

However if it posted 50 and there are workers present, that is when the speed fine doubles.

no I expected a background check/ school transscript from high school, polygraph, etc. its the nature of the job. Just why do they have to know if i ever got into a fight when i ws in grade 1? i don't see the revelance. anyways i don't want to sidetrack the thread, just stating my opinion.

Rolodex-lk
Why not just setup a couple of radar vans in those areas? If rumor is correct those are outsourced anyways. Might get peep's to slow down once they get a $300 ticket or more in the mail.

The 23 interchange is really bad for this. My spedo is out, but I know it's about 10 klicks, so I always go the limit (in fact the 'speed board' tells me I'm about 45 most of the time) and I cannot believe how many bozo's fly past me doing double or more...jeez people even flash to pass when they are comin up on me.

It's not cool, I'm not in construciton, but it's only a matter of time before someone gets hurt there.

kevito_
I think someone went on a rampage last night and ran over most of the signs. Pretty much all of the double-t orange barracades were knocked over or had some sort of damage... the 50 signs were completely gone and someone even turned the sign that measures your speed 90-degrees to the road. This city is ridiculous.

Polygraphs are useless, by the way. Scientifically they have pretty much no merit, thats why they aren't allowed in a court of law in Canada. They are easy to fool or to force the response that you want, if trained. Some USA states allow it, but then again the same states allowed creationism to be taught.

The police want to know your full history of relationships when you were growing up... just in case you were bullied really bad and want to get even with people out partying on Whyte. Maybe you liked to hurt animals by putting them in microwaves? If you can do that, what's to stop you from beating down a 15-year-old underage drinker after you pull her out of a bar? It's kind of a psychological profiling and is very relevant for the line of work.

Kyle2K
i work for a road construction company and i worked on 170th street a while ago doing night shift while the paving was being done. i actually noticed alot more police on the road (mostly because everyone else is sleeping) and did feel like there was an adequate amount of officers in the area.

However most of the police were the ones speeding through our work zone without lights or sirens.

I found that to be quite aggravating how the ones supposed to be protecting us "road construction guys" were actually putting us in more danger. I appreciate their urgency in an emergency, but i wish they would respect the speed limits as well while just on patrol

Also, i would like to know the answer to deathwarden5's question as well, because i think it gives my line of work a bad/lazy image when there are SFD/Men Working signs out at 3am when there is no one working. leaving the signs out at all times makes people 'get used' to them and just ignore them
