Vehicle Equipment Regs:
69(1) A person shall not install, replace or cover the window glazing in a windshield or in a left or right side window of a motor vehicle that is beside or forward of the driver with a transparent, translucent or opaque material.
***
In other words ZERO tint on the windshield or the side windows of the front seats....
as far as the rear windows it can be as dark as you want it (Providing you have proper rearview mirrors)
\/
(2) A person shall not install, replace or cover the rear window glazing in a motor vehicle with a transparent, translucent or opaque material unless the motor vehicle has outside rear view mirrors on both the left and right that comply with section 72(2). |

Sry to hijack the thread, but Blocker, someone was trying to argue to me that if its not stick on tint its fine, like actually smoking the glass, I argued he was wrong but he wouldn't shut up about it and kept insisting that it was fine so long as it wasn't stick on tint.
Its all the same right? Fronts no good but back is fine? |

If the glass is smoked it's fine but extremely expensive.
as far as stick on tint, the most you can go legally is 100%. |

| I understand with smoking your windows its only factory allowed, as some factory made vehicles come with slightly smoked windows. |

Actually.. if you read the regs more carefully.. you can't even put a clear film on the front windows... |

If your front windows have a slight tint or are "smoked" from the factory (OEM) that is allowed...(the tint is in the glass its self, not a film or material that is put on) keep in mind however, if you buy a new car from a dealership and they put tint on this does NOT count as "factory tint" |

Haha.
But why is that? If lets say you put a 3m protective coating on for safety purposes, so that it doesnt shatter upon impact of something, it makes a lot of sense to me. I know that windshields have this, but I dont believe side windows do. |

Actually... the funny thing about that... is the side windows of my durango are like that... or so I've read.. Chrysler took 2 thinner pieces of glass and sandwiched a thin layer of whatever film in the middle.. they say it helps reduce road noise by as much as 6db... and helps reduce intrusion through the window.. but once again.. for lack of a better wording, it's "in the glass" not on the glass and it shipped from factory that way.. |

Heh. So, I guess if you go by those regs, the clear plastic that people put on the side windows of the VW bugs (Air cooled engines mean no hot coolant to draw heat from) is technically illegal, even though it really isn't safe to drive those cars in winter without it. Funny.
Yeah, I've heard that there are cars which came from the factory with 50% tinted windows, where the glass itself is manufactured tinted. A friend of mine has a car like that, and has been ticketed for tint, almost every time he gets pulled over for anything. He's learned to not bother arguing the point with the officer, he just takes the ticket to the CP along with documentation on his windows, and the ticket gets tossed. (Along with his seatbelt tickets, as his car also came without those.) |
