preformance mod.'s and insurance - Click HERE for Original Thread

Rip-X
i was thinking about putting a true duo performance exhaust system on my car, but being a new, young male driver, my insurance is going to be brutal, so i was wondering, if i do put this system on my car, do i have to declare a performance mod. on my car to my insurance provider?
or do i need to ask the company itself?

For any questions that could potentially cost you tens of thousands of dollars it's always best to ask the person who makes the decision.

That being said, my experience is that the insurance company won't care if you have a dual exhaust system (Since it would not contribute to the accident). However, you may not be covered for the cost of it if you make a claim (So you can't say "Look, I just spent $1500 on an exhaust for my car" when it's stolen).

However, if they can prove that the modification you did contributed to the accident (brake failure and you had just installed big brakes) they have the ability to not cover your vehicle's damages.

PLPD is all the same, so you can have a 500hp car and PLPD shouldnt change much. i wouldnt exactly consider an exhaust a mod if it was replaced within reason. my skyline for example had a rusted out exhaust when i first got the car, and i replaced it with an HKS system. the insurance company saw it as a performance mod, but i told them it was more economical to buy the HKS system over an OEM setup. the only thing they really said was if i was to ever replace a part that may or may not add power with an aftermarket part, i should run it through them so they can add it to my file.

i neevr tell my insurance company about performance mods on my car, good for insurance rate but bad if yur car is totalled or stolen. your decision really.

my insurance company doesnt mind if the reason for putting it on is reasonable. my intake and exhaust both got approved and are covered, but they wouldnt cover the intercooler kit. if you ever get into an accident though, thats when things get really bad because they can deny your claim because you failed to disclose the mods you did.

Sad but true.

It won't change, period. PLDP is EXACTLY the same, regardless of the vehicle. The government regulates PLPD costs based upon age and driving history - nothing else. The car involved doesn't even factor in.

Incorrect.

With the new insurance reforms put in place by the government, you can no longer be refused insurance, however your premiums would be so high - you couldn't pay anyways.

most companies when they find out you have mods put you in the high risk category.

I got a mailing from somr company, can't remember which one due to the union I'm with, I called them asked for a quote on the wife's car.. they asked if it had any modifications, I said it has a cold air intake for better milage.. they said does it add any power, I said, nope not really... nothing noticable... they said some people see them as a power adder and as such refused to cover the car, unless returned to stock form.
