fixing ball joints - Click HERE for Original Thread

Gargoyle25
i just called a place about getting a new lower ball joint on the drivers side and he wants $350 for it, does that make sense?

would anyone here be able to help me do it instead? because that seems a little steep for that little part, and i would rather do it myself if i had the tools and knew how to

thanks

Emerson
Check with honda there where some preludes that had recalled ball joints. I go next week for them to replace my font ones for free :p

Wow that is rather pricey, a new ball joint is about 50 bucks and mine took me 30 minutes to change. It CAN be a huge whore to change them though if you dont have the right tools...

I devised a really sneaky way of doing it without a press or even removing the hub from the car.

I just changed mine on my civic yesterday =)

Im showin a new lower balljoint is worht 78$ from the dealer......you rgetting ripped. please share the shop that gave you this price

Ayeso
thats propbably including labour...

NESTLE
ya well its still to much.

Prudz_lude
nah, there is alot of labour for a balljoint. Its not hard but its not the fastest process. Mind you a mechanic could probably do it in 20-30 min but the book charges 3 hours.

Yeah cause the way they do it is noobish! Pulling the entire knuckle, etc.. putting it in a press etc.. :P

My method takes 30 minutes from jacking the car up to putting it back together :P

Prudz_lude
i know that, just saying a shop takes the long way for more money.;)

they take longer cause they do the job the way it was meant to be done to ensure nothing else can get damaged while they are doing the job. by leaving the knuckle in the car, they have a possibility of damaging other parts of the car accidentally and they dont want to be liable for it. alot of the shops i talked to usually flat rate most of their work according to the book anyways, so if they can get it done faster and move more cars, they make more money.

Prudz_lude
i've worked at 3 dealerships, i know what your saying. Some mechanics would finish 6 hour jobs in under 2 and just move on to the next. They made some really good money if they worked hard.

Gargoyle25
hey ayeso, so since you know how and have the tools, can i come over and you help me?:D i could even pay you

it was at speedy on 50st and 23ave, and the guy said it was listed as 3 and a half hours labour or something like that, i want to do all the work on my car, but i just don't have the know how or tools and that seemed like too big of a job (the regular way) to jump into without knowing entirely how to do it

Ayeso
I doubt ill have time anytime soon.

I am moving and shit this weekend and next week.

Gargoyle25
i'll help you move if you help me :D i have almost all day on saturday free

lol speedy glass???

anyways, yes it is 3.5 hours. for r&r INCLUDING changing the hub, bearings seals & rotor, they dont list r&r on just the balljoint says my system, it shouldnt take that long. Its just the way they list it int he system, wich is good for them and sucks for u

phone ames auto, his name is bob(MECHANICAL SIDE) 483-2266

Gargoyle25

no, its a speedy muffler and brakes, i took my brakes there and he said i needed to replace the ball joint because it had play, so i decided to ask him how much it would cost to fix,
