137 in a 110 (marked down quite a bit), failure to produce proof of insurance (my insurance company will be paying that one! They haven't sent me a new pink card yet, fuckers), and tint.

Like 480 bucks.

Yup. Up on the offramp. We were there for a while.

Tint tickets are so fucking gay. Useless cops.

EK9Hatch
Shitty fuckin deal. :(

Jamie

Did he do the "wind up the windows" so he can check for tint?

If my windows where down from the start I just tell them the window switch is broken.

That is correct, they are limited in their powers.

bananaboat
Heh yeah there were a lot of cops out. I'm surprised that an NSX owner wouldn't have a good radar detector though.

I went out for a day trip to Sylvan lake and at one point I was following a black Maxima doing up to 180km/h. As we approached Ponoka and came upon a couple hills and overpasses, I decided to slow back down. A few minutes later I saw RCMP with the black Maxima pulled over.

lol, made me laugh to hear that.

what are the sheriffs for, where did they come from (some weird offshoot of rcmp or what?, or are they like a alberta provincial officer or something?), and what powers do they have exactly?

cuz one day we just started seeing sheriffs everywhere on the highways with no explanation that i ever saw.

They are highway security guards. 'Too good' for mall security but not good enough to be a real cop.

cupcake
Information about Sheriffs

Last year, I think they trained 87 (or somewhere in that ballpark) sheriffs just to conduct highway traffic enforcements.

I wouldn't say they're not good enough to be real cops. They just have different duties and are focused on supporting law enforcement agencies. But then, I'm a little biased.

edit: grammar

Mustard
the reason they gave you the "extra" pain in the ass ticket stuff like tinting and what not, is because they want the speeding stuff to stick.

Let's face it, how many times have you read posts about people fighting tickets "just cause they can."
Everyone fights tickets they 100% deserve, and usually end up getting them reduced or thrown out because of weird loop-holes... so it doesn't surprise me that they would start throwing as much extra stuff on top so you have a hell of time fighting that stuff off and you have no choice but to pay what you should have been paying in the first place...

granted i have no idea how fast you were going or what tickets you got and for what, and to my knowledge Ryan, you are pretty well known for being an easy going and law respecting individual, but it's just been my experience with the cops and what not that they are just pissed off with all the lawyer hiring and ticket dodging.

something to consider, anyway

grego
Sheriffs still carry guns.

And everyone should be aware that the sheriffs sit in groups or 3 - 4 on the highway 2 offramps near edmonton with another officer clocking on top of the bridge.

I've seen 6 at one time. They set up around 6:45-7:00pm on weeknights, and catch many many people.

Ooo, that's a burn. Unfortunately your insurance company won't pay for shit.

You can get them to email you a copy -then you can print it.

Trust -I tried that route.

the_fornicator
I got lucky. Went to pigeon lake on Saturday. Booted it on the way there without a hitch, but on the way back was a different story.

Was going about 150 when a cop car going on the other side of the road spotted me and quickly hammered on the brakes.

I saw him see me and I saw him turn on the lights and hit the brakes so immediately, I went behind the car in the right lane and stayed with the flow of traffic and waited for him to come up behind me and give me a nice little piece of paper.

Awkwardly enough, no lights ever came. I noticed that I cut sort of hard into the right lane (I shoulder checked). Almost immediately after the lane change, I noticed an exit. I debated taking it, but figured to stick around and bite the bullet.

I think the police thought I bailed into the off ramp cause they never did catch up despite me going 10 under thereafter.

Counting my lucky stars.

AudiInProgress
Just because your insurance company didn't mail your pink card fast enough... Doesn't mean shit.

You're the one who CHOSE to drive without the proper paperwork in your glovebox.

The Stig
I tried fighting the Insurance for not sending me a pink card, it turns out "they forgot" and it's my responsibility to make sure it's in my car.

Fair enough.

So I lost.

I had to do some research on the sheriffs, unless this has changed since April 10, 2007... On the sol gen website it stated

"a five-week induction training course at the Staff College in Edmonton provides basic training for recruits, including ethics and professionalism, conflict resolution, criminal law, general security procedures, court room protocol, defensive driving, defensive tactics, arrest and control, scenario based training, bomb threat seminars, organized crime lectures, and physical training…

Upon graduation, training continues with one week of firearms training, four to six weeks of job shadowing, and nine months under the supervision of a senior Sheriff.”"

Basicly...

Sheriff- 5 weeks of class room, 1 week of fire arms, six weeks of "job shadowing" --- with NO pollygraph

In comparision....

EPS- 20 weeks of class room, which includes fire arms (just about every week), minimum 15 weeks with a PTO (Police Training Officer) --- all AFTER passing a pollygraph...

The province is going to have a lot of "civil issues" pretty soon

That is my little "rant" I have nothing against, sheriffs... but they are not Police Officers or "Cops"

They are Peace Officers...

It is a failure to produce proof ticket... Likely not... If he was issued the "no insurance" ticket he would get off, but he has to produce proof of insurance upon demand... hence the ticket...

Absolutely...

The thing that bugs me about sheriffs, is because of that "mis-information" they are in essence, bastardizing policing... they dress like police officers, drive cars like police officers, have red and blue lights like police officers, and carry guns... so every one thinks they are police officers but they are not.

I blame the province, they have muddy the waters on roles and responsibilities around each division.

security - peace officers (various levels)- police officers...

AuZZZie
Fuck i sure feel good after the Sherrif tranning schedule was posted..

Retards with guns and power and slim to no training. Just went I thought Governments couldn't get any dumber.

The sherrifs probably get looked down on from EPS and real police too. So that's going to give them the "something to prove" complex.

Wait till you get a short asian sherrif the pulls you over.. Fuckin game over. Short man syndrome, minority syndrome, and couldn't hack it as EPS.

Flex
I seen you guys pulled over there as well. Thought it might be you...that nsx is hard to miss. Jenn thought it was a ferrari.

We went out to sylvan and back and man that was a bad day to pick speeding. There where sherrifs on ever overpass. Jenn was listening to the tv and it said the sheriffs gave out 1755 speeding tickets alone...there where alot more with other offences.

AuZZZie
Which kind of raises the question. What is a Sherrif's role. Sounds too me like their no better than a photo radar operator. All their there for is to collect $$$.

SilverE90
^ I think they are there to free up the RCMP's time to do more 'real' police work. If that is the case it doesn't bother me. I don't speed enough to worry anyway.

If they actually do more than give tickets then fine.. But if their sole purpose is a provincial cash cow then i say shoot them all.

I called my company last renewal when I still hadn't received the pinks in the mail...they faxed me what they call a "binder" it was only good for 10 days...but at least I had something to produce if needed...my usual coverage...and for sure by 10 days I would have my pinks

yes they are armed, my cousin was a sherrif for a couple of years and my uncle is one of the head honchos of the dept. but as blocker said, way less training then EPS. my aftormentioned cousin is in his EPS training at the moment and is shocked at how simple sherrifs was.

Honda_Civic_25
You guys may be seen Sheriffs all over Alberta policing all the small towns. Word has it that the Sheriffs are going to chanllenge the RCMP for the Policing Contract in 2010(I think thats what it runs out) for Alberta. Thats why they have kicked up their hiring in the past few years. I dunno too much about it but thats what I have heard, I am sure if they get the contract they will toughen up their hiring standards but still, they are legit and they are out there helping the RCMP with highway patrol and doing court duties.

That is the rumor

Yes they are "legit"... a hyundia pony is a legit car... doesn't mean it is a good one....

The idea of "sheriffs" (with current training) policing is a very scary one... are they going to retrain a 5 yr member of sheriffs to do "Police" work?

Again, they are not "Cops"

zhao
wow, sheriff's FTL. someone seriously is advocating to replace the RCMP's roll in alberta with these sheriffs?

what kind of self righteous power mongering jackass would think that replacing one of the best trained police forces in the world with one with security guard level training is a good idea. i really hope no one in alberta is stupid enough to want to get rid of the RCMP and replace them with these sheriff's.

It comes down to $$$. The Alberta government can "save" tons of money by hiring these over-glorified security guard types instead of having more RCMP members doing traffic enforcement.

To be honest, I'm happy to see enforcement out on the streets, but I'm not happy about the giant chip they always seem to carry on their shoulders.

i'm not happy to see enforcement on the streets. my stance is why devote so many resources to enforcing only one very small aspect of law in the province? its illogical that there is so many resources devoted to issuing 'speeding tickets'. To me, thats like devoting the same amount of resources to laws surrounding dogs; such as ticketing for licensing issues and no leashes.

traffic tickets aren't even something that really affects me (12 years of driving here and only one traffic ticket to date; speeding, was going 10 over), its just something that seems totally illogical to focus resources on.

Thats the dumbest thing I have heard all weekend, and I was at Boonstock and there are alot of dumb people there.

First of all how would you like people flying down roads, going 160+ KM/H or maybe ripping 100KM/H in a school zone where your kid could one day be playing. Speeding kills people and thats why they put money into enforcing the law. I bet you get pissed off when you are driving down the highway and a car acting like a idiot flys by you almost taking off your mirror, well without traffic enforcement, instead of it being every 1/100 drivers it would be almost more than half, alot of drivers are dicks and without sherrifs/rcmp to patrol the highways then no one woudl care and speed like fuckers.

160 km/h on a divided highway is NOT fast. It's pretty easy to get pretty much anything on wheels up to that speed, since my parents old 1996 Caravan could do it. The speed limits in North America (Canada in particular) are rediculously low. Texas did the smart thing and upped it's limits to 80 mph on Interstates. Traffic fatalities CLIMBED in Montana after they put speed limits back on the highways, instead of the "reasonable and prudent" limits they had before.

I could sit at 180 all day going to Calgary or Jasper and not pose a problem. You just have to pay a little more attention.

Preach it brother!!

Look at the Autobahn in Germany and Europe. No speed limit and how many accidents are there? Way less than us. The only difference is that in a accident they usually just hose the bodies out of the cars and wash them down the drains.
