Wow 2 people got busted speeding, high numbers. One was doing 206, in a 110 zone, and was hit with a $6000 fine, the other was going 162 in an 80 zone and got an $8500 fine. Crazy. Beware if you speed, if you go over 50km/hr over the limit its a $3000 fine, 6 month suspension, or more.
Here's the article,.

| Neither of them will pay those fines in full. Lawyer time! |

"A recently-installed section of Alberta’s traffic code tags drivers caught going more than 50 km/h over the speed limit with a minimum $3,000 fine and a 6-month licence suspension.
Such a devastating ticket would impact the offender’s insurance for years to come, said Rosalie Cederstrand, a Hinton insurance agent. A 26-year-old driver of a Chevrolet Cobalt, assuming a clean driving history, would see their insurance skyrocket by more than $4,000 for at least three years, with the suspension taking longer to lose effect. "
lawyer time indeed. At that cost you will probably pay less for the lawyer than paying for the ticket  |

Especially over time, that would have huge impacts.
I have no problem getting a speeding ticket, and know that I deserve increased insurance for being tagged as a speeder, but the worst part of it all is the increase in insurance. Over time, that will be enormous. Or rather can be. |

| As an aside, thanks for posting this. I didn't know about this new law. I got one a few years ago for 51 over and I got it down to a $400ish fine. Sure learned my lesson though, I only needed one of those to smarten up. |

When did that take effect? Riding the bike its pretty easy to do 51 over. Its pretty scary for sure. |

I remember seeing a chart with all the fines, but that was while ago. I also had no idea the fines were that high. I had a speeding ticket for 140 in a 110 (my first ticket in probably 7 years, none since) and it was $160. Big difference in fines for an extra 21kmh!
These days gas prices keep me roped in more than anything, especially since my car takes premium. The nice thing, if you do 115 and pass an RCMP going the other way you don't have to worry about that "oh shit how fast am I going" thing.
Abuse the cruise control. My friends say "oh yeah, you can do 125kmh on the highway with no problems, but they are rocking minivans haha, I keep it under 120kmh, its just a lot less hassle. |

Burnnnnnnnnnn two of my friends got tickets and courtdates. $3k each  fucking brutal. Both of them got them while on the highway making a pass on the car infront of them. Funniest and sadest part is traffic does about 20km over already in a 110km zone. You do another 20-30km to pass the car infront of you when you are already doing 130km and boom, you get clocked doing 152km an hour  brutal.
This new law is seriously going to backlog the courts soooooooo bad it won't even be funny. Oh wait, it will be extremely funny  |

There aren't any single lane highways in Alberta that have a 110 km/h limit, they are max 100. So I have to believe that they were on a divided highway.
Based on that, I can't figure out why they would have to go 20-30 kms faster to pass? |

| okay, well i guess the limit was 100km/hr. Either way, they have 2 huge tickets i am glad i don't have. 20-30km to pass is not that fast. |

Shouldn't, as everybody caught doing 51km/h or higher has to go to court...it's automatic. What they've done is take some of the time spent arguing back and forth between the Crown Prosicutor and the Defense (person, or person's lawyer) and imposed an automatic minimum fine. That should actually speed things up (pardon the pun). |
