Filling with Regular vs. Premium - Click HERE for Original Thread

walkur1
DISCLAIMER: I'm too lazy to search if it's been talked about already, so screw anybody who corrects me.

I have been thinking about gas lately. Not that I can't afford the premium, but if I'm not driving like a fool to and from work (below 5k RPM), do I really need to fill up with premium?

With my limited knowledge of engines, I would assume that the higher octane would, theoretically, only be needed when in the higher RPMs, especially VTEC. Am I right in this assumption? Or does it need the premium because of the 11:1 compression ratio? What do you guys know/think?

Beagles
From what ive been seen/been told if your car only says fill with regular, its probably a waste to get premium since the engines were made to only need regular.

I drove a couple months with premium and i can honestly say that it doesnt change anything for me (I may not have Vtec but the lil B21 still gives er good till 6200)

So i would assume that if the manual says fill with premium (because the H series is a bit more brawny than a lil unloved B21) then do it, because the engine wouldnt run as strong as it would with regular.

Thats my 2 nickels and a dime

The required fuel is premium, however, the only thing that would change would be my engine blowing up... unless the computer can detect the different octane levels, in which case I would just run 87 and let the computer do the rest. But I don't think this is the case... I could be wrong.

Beagles
my friend runs regular in his 93 benz... and im yet to see it blow up (but i dont think it runs at peak performance.. since it can barely make it to 100km in a decent time)

If anything, the car will run... but the engine will despise you.
It would be like Eating a juicy steak for supper everyday, and then given some shitty fish burger from mcdonalds.

if a car manufacturer states premium it is in your best interest to use premium. the reason is the h22 has a fairly high compression ratio, so anything under 91 octane could technically cause the motor to knock. if the computer picks it up it will adjust timing to compensate, but its still something i wouldn't do. lots of people do do it though. mostly guys who buy nice fancy sports cars that have no idea how to take care of them. it will hurt performance and have potential to cause harm. but probably won't. thats just a worse case.

If it's not a matter of being able to afford it, run premium. Period.

If it was a matter of affording it, I'd say run regular for a bit then sell the car before it implodes.

When I had my H23 I ran regular everyday. When I got the H22 I started running premium. Witht he rebuild engine I run premium w/ an octane booster sometimes. I think premium is a bit cleaner as well.

Fazda
in my s4 i always run 94, wouldn't run anything less, lol the damn thing reccomends 95, haha but the probe reccomends premium as well, used to run 94, now im only giving it 89 but not driving it hard, it seems to be fine, the gas milage is a little less then the premium though.

first off H22's do not have an 11:1 compression ratio. It is a 10.0:1 for 4th/5th gen USDM preludes. JDM has a 10:4:1. Regular will make your car run sluggish if you have an H22 and your knock sensor will go off. Rev high and you might be able to actually get some knock. Mike is also correct to say that premium is a cleaner fuel. The injectors filters will get dirter faster by running regular.

a buddy of mine had a 92 sho as soon as he would run regular it would knock like a sob. preimuim and the knock went away

I'm going by what that says, and if infact you are correct, then you should citation that crap in wiki. And I'm going to assume mine is 11.0:1 because I'm awesome.

Anyways, I see that running regular wouldn't be a good idea at all, so thanks for the input everybody.

While I have you all here though, what is your opinions/thoughts on octane boosters? I've been told that they cause problems with sensors and such. Speedtech told me that my engine is actually supposed to be running 94 (I think), because that is what they use in Japan. I went out and bought some octane boosters (3 left), and when my car was idling like crap they told me not to use the booster. Could this have contributed? Now that I have my vacuum leak fixed, should I try it again? Would running higher octane really give me any performance gain? I'm also going to assume that the higher octane you can get from select gas stations would be better/cleaner than dumping a booster into a tank of 91, right? Where are some known stations which have 91+ octane? I've never come across anything more than Husky's 92...

husky on 91st and ellersile has 94! a block from my house woot woot!

From what i've read running to much octane causes the fuel to burn hotter and for to long. So as the exaust is being expelled there is still fuel burning in your exaust system which can do some mean damage to your cat and sensors. Also i've been told that 'extra' octane doesnt really do anything on a stock engine except cost you extra money. Personally I only run premium and on the odd occasion I want to have some fun i'll throw in a little extra octane, it may not do much or anything, but it makes me feel good to spoil my baby.

Wiki is full of incorrect info. There was a thread on honda-tech last year where a bunch of us went all over the wiki info and started posting completely crap info because a) it was really funny and b) to prove a point that wiki is full of crap. Your not even allowed to use wiki at all for uni. If you do you get an instant zero.

Search the honda-tech archieves. That is where you will find your info and that info is much much more accurate. It is based on actual measurements people have taken with pictures yadda yadda yadda.
