240sx smoking steering column, complete loss of power - Click HERE for Original Thread

C90
Hey I am looking at buying a 91 240sx coupe (ka24de) and the guy has said it has been leaking from the gaskets. It has 267,000 kms on it and I figured I would just swap it out, but he recently started it and it started to smoke lightly from the steering column followed by complete loss of power. Now I am wondering if the fact that it was leaking oil and that it might of been hot out may have been the problem, or if prehaps something was damaged electrically within the car. If anyone has any advice or may know what the problem is that would be a big help. Thanks.

Electrical problems = Headaches.

I would continue my search elsewhere.

agreed, look elsewhere.

likely a wire shorted out under the hood and smoked the full circut. from what i have seen in other cars, that will mean a)diagnosing what caused the problem in the first place and b) a new wiring harness. if it was your car already i'd say fix it. but dont' buy a car in that situation. unless it is beyond dirt cheap.

Why if he is just using this as a shell? If its rust free, give him a thousand, if its rusty (aka driven in winter at some point) walk away.

nissan was notorious for bad ignition switches. if the smoke came from the column, that would be my guess. i've changed a few of those. cheap fix.

omg .... driven in winter before ... throw it away

Ya the guy got back to me saying the problem sounds to be isolated to the ignition switch and that the previous owner installed a kill switch for security purposes but that it looks like a hack job. Not to sure how much it would cost to get that all fixed though.
