| I was thinking of making a smart-ass remark like that, but decided to keep the asshole-ness to a minimum tonight. |

I'd hate to drop a bike though.. I've thought about wanting to take a bike course too, but the last time I rode a bike was many many years ago, ended up flipping over the handlebars, was the first and last time I've been on a dirtbike.
A coworker of mine told me about the nait course, apparently its pretty good. |

| I took the equivalent of the NAIT course when I lived in Grande Prairie. It was awesome, our instructors really knew what they were talking about and I dropped 2 bikes... not hard, but still. They are more concerned about you than the bikes. Highly recommended! |

I would recommend the NAIT course, but I'm a little biased since I am one of the instructors.
We supply the bikes and have several styles to choose from including CBR 125s. The only thing you need is a jacket boots gloves and a certified helmet.
The nice thing about our course is the two days you are with us are spent on the bike. You do your classroom time on your own time before coming to us. We help you learn all the skills you need to pass the test and then some. If you feel you aren't ready we offer extra classes every Tuesday night until you feel confident about it.
The only downside is our course fills up fast. Call 780.378.5000 to see when they are booking for. |

My girlfriend and I just signed up for a bike course. I'm not sure which course it is as she signed us up. We are going to go look at gear, what are some good place to go find some gear. What kind of jacket do we need to have and is it true you have to have boots, but not steel toe? |

I think it's boots cause they don't come off as easy as shoes..
For helmet though.. do they just care if it's DOT? I have a DOT helmet from snowmobiling... the lense lost it's seal so it fogs up when it's really cold.. so I took the shield off then bought another helmet for snowmobiling.. not sure it they're dot or not... |

Steel toes aren't the best as you can't feel the controls. Riding boots work best.
Lots of deals online for gear, ebay. I like newenough.com. Their closeout deals are pretty crazy. Lots of people selling used gear too on edmontonsportriderz.com. |

Helmets should be replaced every couple of years. The foam in them degrades. It sounds like your helmet may meet the minimum standards but it would be a good idea to invest in a better one. Do you really want to take chances with your head? Online you can get some great deals. I picked up a brand new decent looking HJC helmet for $65. Rule number one you gotta look good! :P
If your helmet doesn't have a visor you will want to bring some sunglasses. You want to have some form of eye protection to protect yourself in case some pebbles get kicked up. |

Ahh well... the one I have is a black hjc DOT(was $130)... I've only worn it for a few months... even then it was only maybe for a couple hours here and there.. it's really quite new in useage hours... My new sled helmet is dot as well ($170)... but it looks kinda like a mx helmet... I figure if they are designed to protect my head while I'm doing 90+mph on unprodictable terrain they should be good for a bike on pavement eh?
I wear glasses.. and have perscription sunglasses as well.. and I think the visor should work when it's warm out no probs.. |

Both sound fine. I was thinking they were like snowboard helmets they sell at sport check. Helmets are a tricky thing, there are lots of helmets that shouldn't be used that people use. They are really designed to only take one hit. Once you down with them they should be replaced. |

Yup I know that :P I've gone down on the sled... but never hit my head....
Then you get the guys out there on bikes with sandels, shorts, wife beaters.. and a decent helmet.. wtf???? seriously.. if you go down.. OUCH!!!...
How is denim, like jeans for wearing while riding? or are chaps the only way to go? I always wear boots... even when I was in Florida :P , A good leather jacket, no prob.. gloves... certain type? I have cut resistanct leathers with a slash liner, supposidly 10 times better than cop gloves... would those be good? |

Proper riding gloves with reinforced palm and pinky are ideal but the others will do.
That's how they know you aren't from around there. It doesn't feel right if I'm riding without all my gear. I always feel nervous if I cheat and wear shoes so I always wear my gear.
Jeans really aren't ideal but it is the minimum I'll wear on my legs. It really doesn't protect that much. I have some textile pants with leather reinforcement in the hit areas. I also have a full leather suit. |
