Should I ship it, or go and get it? (Car from the U.S.) - Click HERE for Original Thread

EDISKRAD EHT
I've found the car I'll be buying in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Now that's roughly 4,000km away, so to you guys (who have imported cars from the U.S.),

- What would be the better choice? (Flying and driving it back, or shipping the car here)

- Anyone specific I should contact for shipping it?

I would love to go get it and drive it back, but 4k is alot of driving. I already go on holidays for 2 weeks at the end of the month, and have to drive to Vancouver and back.

Thanks in advance, and any good solid advice I'll buy that person a beer (or 10).

What about getting it shipped to some place closer to you/the border? then drive it back

EDISKRAD EHT
If I do ship it, I think it'll be all the way.

Well I was going to drive a car back from Phoenix... then I decided that I didn't want to be stuck on the side of a road a nice looking car mod'ed to hell that doesn't run (I passed up a beastly turbo mr2 last trip, kinda wish I bought it, kinda glad I didn't type thing...)

If its something fun to drive and reliable, drive it back. If its an SUV, truck, or queer car (mr2 spyder comes to mind  ) ship it. You can get some insane deals on flights so driving would definitely be a lot cheaper. I went to Phoenix for a couple days just after spring break for $100/ticket each way. It was some weird last minute sale.

You could easily do 4k km in 3 days, especially if the high ways are anything like Arizona/Cali/NewMEX people do 80mph in the slow lane (and then brake for no obvious reason but I don't know wtf that is about). My grandpa was doing 95mph for an entire 500km drive and before that I hadn't ever witnessed him speed.

You guys will see when it's final.

I have not done it but I'm planning to do the same.
Drive it if you want to save money.
Driving it has the risk of getting a stone chip.
Driving it has the risk of getting to an accident along the way.
Driving it has the risk of getting stuck on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere.
Shipping it has the risk of the handlers damaging the car (many horror stories in various auto forums)
Shipping increases your cost of ownership.

I drove mine back from texas. I got a could dings from stones, and a fair few rock chips. My buddy ilya just drove home a turbo is300. Well, he drove it to chicago, where his turbo blew. Annd then threw it on the back of a uhaul for the rest of the way home. Sean drove home his g35, taped up the front bumper and everything. And his front bumper is now heavily speckled with missing paint.

But did I enjoy the drive? Hell yes.

Side note, i shipped my first car i bought from the states, it definately cost me a bit more, and i hate to wait ALOT longer for it, but it was still just as clean as when it left. I cant remember who i shipped it with. It was 5 years ago, sorry.

95EagleAWD
I drove my NSX home Dana. One of the best drives of my life. Since I'm pretty sure I know what you're getting, I'd say drive it! It'll be a good time, summer's here, and cars are, well, meant to be driven,

EDISKRAD EHT
For the drive i would be doing the Painters Tape Special on the front and behind the wheels.

I think I might just have to turn it into a mini holiday. I don't want to drive all that way in a rush, and since I've never been in that area I'd like to experience the surroundings as well.

Here's a teaser,

95EagleAWD
I knew it!

Good choice, Dana. Yeah, for sure turn it into a holiday. I wish I had taken more than 2 days to drive home from Houston. I should have taken a week or 10 days and stopped off at places.

Wookey
Nice GTO:thumbup:

I guess the cat's out of the bag....

Yeah I have a vacation to BC planned for the end of the month, but I think I might ditch those plans (as dissappointed as it'll make a few people) and fly down to Greensboro to get this,

If it's a new or reliable car, drive it back. I've heard too many stories of nice cars getting damaged in shipping.

Anyway, I've bought 2 cars in the US since it was a lot cheaper. I found two deals on two Del Sols. Flew down. First trip was to Allentown, Pennsylvania, the other to Chicago, Illinois.

And yes, it's possible to get back in two days. It just really hurts your arms. And it sucks driving towards the sun. :( Just remember, to send your documents to US Customs. They require 72 hours advance notice. I took a side trip to Mt. Rushmore since I was ahead of schedule. :)

But for the GTO, definitely drive it back. :)

its a big modded v8 its going to get 11 mpg, and why put an extra 2-3K km on it

Owait, what happens if it rains:confused:

Well, my dad was co-driving, and we only drove during the daylight.

But yeah. 75 mph average, 35 mpg; good times!

Adam
Hot supercharger going for 2 - 3 days straight, 4000 kms...with the goose to 100 mph++ every once in a while, damage to paint etc etc.

If it were mine, I would spend the 2k to ship it. You'll end up spending close to that in fuel, food, plane tickets, and hotel rooms.

That 4000kms is a lot of wear and tear in a very short period of time on a heavy bolt on motor. Sure the drive would be fun but it would be a fucking shitty day if something happens...then what? 2k tow bill?

Ship It. 2c.

darkjedi
drive it unless you can find an extremely reliable shipping company..

When I paid to ship my s2000 I was out of the loop for a lot of it and at the mercy of useless truck drivers and crap.

If I ever buy a car from the states again I will be driving it home.

I'm going to take about 5-7 days to drive it home, and I'm putting painters tape all over the front end, and behind the wheels.

It seems like all the guys who have done this first hand say to drive it back. I'll take their word for it..

My plane tickets are booked. My girlfriend and I are going down to pick it up and we're going to take a week or so to drive it back and take in the sites.

Fazda
that sounds like a blast, i would love to fly down somewhere, pick up a nicely 500hp b5 s4 for 15,000$ and take in all the sites, good choice flying down, i can't wait to see it when your back!

The LS2 with the 6 Speed manual gets on average 25MPG.

Here's a quote from a guy with the same blower as mine.
I get 10 in the city, 25 on the highway. 06 Magna Charged LS2 535rwhp.
Psi (sean) drove his g35 back with painters tape on the front. It just ended up taking off the paint anyways, where rocks hit it. Consider buying a bra for it, for the drive home. Or paying to have it 3m'd.

RADRIDE
I would never drive a modded car home that far especially one that you did mod. I would ship it up like I did with my supra. If it breaks down on the side of the road your fucked.

I read your shipping thread and that's one of the things keeping me away from shipping it actually.

I'm definately going to go that route.

Thats exactly why I'm glad I wasn't the one stranded on the side of the road. I guess you hear good stories and bad stories about shipping cars. Are you going to bring her out to UC when you get it? Are you going to park with the SRT-4 guys? Or are you going to park by yourself and start your own group?

Yeah I am aware of that chance, but I will be babying it until I get it back home.

The first week I have it back I promise you guys I'll bring it by UC.

As for parking...... I'll just be finding an empty spot.

That post made me lol though.

And my buddy ilya just drove his turbo lexus is300 back. Made it to chicago and it shit the bed. So he had to throw it on the back of a uhaul and drive it the rest of the way home...

Then it burnt to the ground once he got it here :drama:

Flex
I agree with making a holiday out of it and driving it home. The way I look at it is, modded or not the car has only 9 000miles on it, f it cant take the drive back here why the hell would you want buy it then in the first place.

And Im a huge beleiver in cars are meant to be driven, do what you can to protect it (3m or whatever) but if it gets a few rock chips that only means your using it and its not a garage queen. Drive it...thats what its meant for.

Psi
If you do painter's tape the front end. Do multiple layers!

Graphicdude
nice ride, if you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for it?

might not be as good on gas as your NEON

crxsi
hey man i just recently brought my SL500 up, luckly i had a good contact down there to drive it up for me. And it came from oklahoma, in that period of 1-2 days he drove it up TO regina and there wasnt that much rock chips at all. maybe 4-5 :S. Shipping companies take to long so drive it up have fun enjoy the new baby.

Plus i got more rock chips on the drive to kelowna :S

EDISKRAD EHT
I'm back. The trip was great.

Took a little detour to Virginia Beach for a few days. Beautiful place.

I got a bra for the car shipped to NC before I went there. It helped ALOT.

I officially hate Illinois with a passion now though. Their roads are the WORST I have ever seen, and to top it off I passed through at least 6-7 tolls on I-95 in Illinois. How the hell can you charge so much to drive on a road and then leave it like complete shit?

The rest of the drive was gorgeous though.

I absolutely love the car. I don't regret the purchase for a second.

I got it for what I sold the Neon for. You have to love the U.S. car market.
