Hey what's going,
I'm looking to start a welding apprenticeship in alberta and I don't know where too start. I graduated from a pre-employed welding program, the course was a 1 year program, at the end of the program I wrote and passed my block 1 welders exam. Iv recieved my F3(6011) plate ticket, F4(7018)plate ticket and an F3/F4 pipe ticket in the 6g position. These are New Brunswick tickets, so i do not know if they are considered the same out here in alberta. That being said, I am able to weld with SMAW in all positions, my Pipe test was done with a 6011 root and a 7018 fill and cap.
I am CWB certified in SMAW as well as Flux Core Arc Welding. I am able to read blueprints, I have an understand for metallurgical principals, iv done some manufacturing welding as well as custom welding. I love it with a passion and I would like to work my way towards my B-pressure and Red seal.
If you would like my resume please send me a pm, or if you know of someone looking to hire an apprentice please send me a pm.
any information that can guide me in the right direction would be most appreciated.
You can also e-mail me at AndreChoumiline@msn.com
I thank you for your time.

| Try Concorde Metal Manufacturing. It is worth the shot. They build custom electrical equipment. All the sheet metal is design and cut on a CNC punch. |

just curious too why your against ampscott, any information is helpful, good or bad. feel free to share, As well if there are any pros out there that might be able to give me a heads up with a few things i should look for in order to find a reputable company that would be most appreciated. Also the wages vary but as i consider my self a quality worker, just so I'm not getting kind of screwed over. what are the type of rates out there with someone with my qualifications in and around edmonton ?
its never easy finding a reliable and quality job with out a good contact and i guess that's kind of what I'm looking for by posting on a few forums.
anyway thanks for your time

| ampscot's not all bad, but the supervisor on the welding side is a complete dick. the one main nice thing is the profit sharing and instant benefits. figured i would just throw it out there, im sure there are better places to work. |

Who is in charge of the welding shop now? Jim was really good, Terry is a bit of a hard ass at times. It is more of the fact its basically a assembly line, you weld the same thing over and over and over...
They get cranky when you need a tip, they would rather you clean spatter for an hour...
But you gotta work for a year or so before they get you welding...work the sandblaster or something. I worked mad OT on the blaster, got more done than anyone before....and got an in making belt guards cause another guy quite.
But they wont actually sign you up to be a first year apprentice till a year AFTER that...what the fuck is with that?
They will give you a sheet with a basic blueprint, you have alot of jigs to make the stuff, it will say make 20 or something....so for 3 days you make the same boring thing over and over.
There may be profit sharing, but Jman rate is only 27....far under par.
After working for a year there, accomplishing lots, being safe...he wouldn't sign my apprenticeship....I quite and went plumbing.
I told another guy....he went to Terry and said sign me as an apprentice today or I quite....
he quite....and now he works for Priority mechanical like me doing plumbing...O and by the way im signed as an apprentice and should be a second year by september (1 year in).
Avoid ampscott.

fair enough
doubtful you can even buy 6011 at 95% of the shops around Alberta anyways though. |

kinda old thread but it may help some people in the end. Edmonton Exchanger is horseshit. they hire you on as a "welder" but there are only like 3 guys in the shop that actually weld. you move sheet metal, cut scrap, measure and stamp esab cut steel for the... oh yeah... forever!
they tell you that you'll be signed up for an apprenticeship after 3 months... most guys there it wasnt until a year. my supervisor had been there for 6 years and was a journeyman welder... who ran the esab table, he never touches anything welding related.
they say they'll apprentice you... they actually just allow you to have the time off to go to school.... not the same as an apprenticeship.
the shop isn't safety oriented at all, they have lots of guys with their heads up their asses showing you exactly what not to do. something about 17 loss time incidents in a single month really didnt make me want to be there.
i was there for 1 day and handed in my keys on day 2.
plus union is bullshit... 47$ to join, 4% off your gross pay, 35$ per month... i'll stick to non-union. you need to join the union just to get your orientation in edmonton exchanger. dont waste the cash and go somewhere else. |

unless youre in a structure shop...
apprentices and journeyman are pretty much useless...
exchanger is a pressure shop...which is why no one can weld...unless you have an absa "C" or "B" pressure it is against the law for you to weld anything that holds pressure....
and for you to join the union its more than 47 bucks....thats what it costs for you to pull a slip as a permit...to join its anywhere from 150-500 depending on if you're a app or jman...field or shop...
and by the way union is the highest paid around here...with the exception of a few non union pressure shops...
structure pay is weak pay... |
|
|
| revy69 |
| i disagree to that structure pay is low/weak im a fresh journeyman with a cwb working towards my "b" and i make over 34 an hour which is decent in my opinion...b rate is 37 tho |
|
|
| boostedwrx |
34 for a jman? where? i was getting 33.97 as a 3rd year in a pressure shop
so structure pay= weak
and btw i am a b pressure...and even 37 is at the lower end of the chain considering pyramid pays 42 |
|
|
| revy69 |
| 42??? if your talking about a newspaper clipping your sadly mistaken man, the next day it was corrected at 39 something and thats total man.... thats not your base plus thats total...my base is 34. 56 and my total comes out to like 44 with my vac/stat/rrsp/ etc.... if i was b pressure i wouldnt be talking about your 2 dollars and hour as huge money cuz i would be running a rig on one of many sites....where were u making 34 as a 3rd year???? where are you working right now? |
|
|
| boostedwrx |
When I was a 3rd year I ran a rig for mps welding at encana for 8 months at contract rate..and then went to syncrude where I still am for shift/signing bonus.
and if the pyramid pay is 39 all in.. my bad, I read the paper...thats it...
44 with vac/stat/rrsp....break it down here what are you getting for each and what company is it?
oh, and enjoy running a rig...not as spectacular like everyone seems to think...
and no where did I say 42 was huge money... I said it was at the higher end of the pay scale... |
|
|
| revy69 |
| i do run a rig... a cwb rig for ledcor at suncor....i have been since i was a second year, i am just got my ticket in july and i have been practicing for my b im am actually scheduled to take it in another 2 weeks, the 44 comes from (i think this is how it goes) i dont have the agreement on me so i cant be sure until i get that little book but its a 10% vacation pay, 7% retention pay, 1.50 an hour into rrsps, 3% clothing pay, Travel pay( i stay half an hour outta site) thus making me an overtime hour a day, oh and a tool allowance which is like 30 bucks a cheque.....i ran portables at the ledcor modyard which is a pipe/structural shop, and if you were a contractor wouldnt that mean you were not making overtime on your 33 and hour, and having to pay insurance on your company??? therefore making your long work weeks at encana pointless?? if your at syncrude your obviously a union rboy, and i know union rates you arnt making more than 37 an hour as a qualified journeyman...b pressure rig in min $90.00 |
|
|
| boostedwrx |
I said contract rate...as in contract by hand...which was 50 an hour... doing cwb welds... and I ran the truck for his company so I never had to get insurance...cause i was covered under his company..so it wasnt pointless...nice try though
and no, im not a union boy, I work directly for syncrude...basemine...dyke shop....tailings pipe...so nice try again.
and rig pay/shop pay are two different things...if you went to a shop you wouldnt get what you are now...
I guess I should have stated structure pay in a shop is weak...
are you running ledcors rig? you must be cause 44 an hour isnt right if its yours and your in the field. |
|
|
| revy69 |
| i run s rig for ledcor they wont let me run my own till im a b pressure, ive been running one since i was 19(two years ago) when i got my cwb as a second year, but even runnin a portable welding structural in town i got the same rate.... how come it said 33.97 at a contractors rate as a third year in your previous reply??? but whatever how do u like it at syncrude? killing any ducks lately lol? |
|
|
| boostedwrx |
33.97 was at willbros...I was there for only a few weeks after I got out of third year...that was the pressure shop...then to mps for 50...then to syncrude for salary + ot...
and syncrude is fucking great...I love it here....stable...good pay....and aprils retention deal is supposed to be sick...
and no, haha we havent killed any ducks lately that im aware of
im assuming you will be rigging up after you get your b? where are you doing it? keyano? |
|
|
| revy69 |
| im actually practicing at work....im sure your quite aware of how much stant around time there is, and im gonna do some practice at grb as much as i can then its friday test day, if i dont pass the first one im gonna do one at qualimet i got it all set up. prolly start welding pipe by hand till the spring then rig up for a few years.... and then something more stable/relaxing will be on the agenda....well have fun at syncrude....are u in camp or living in town? |
|
|
| boostedwrx |
grb is rough haha if you can put out a pipe there with those machines fuck you'll be able to do it anywhere
im living in town...my dad also works at syncrude and im from fort mac so we still have a house here
are you doing your test in edmonton? |
