cut n polish or wetsand or something... - Click HERE for Original Thread

gen3novahonk
I just bought a black car that has plenty of swirls and a few paint blemished but overall looks pretty nice. But to get it nice and shiny i think that it could use a good cut n polish or wet-sand.......not sure what you all would recommend and maybe where i could get this done at a good price and get good results.

any input would be greatly appreciated! thanks

polishing compound (mild abrasive) and a buffer

Try clay baring the car first, then get a good cut polish and a high quality random orbital polisher. Dont get some POS canadian tire job for $50, a real ROP runs around $150+. That is about all I would reccomend you do on your own, if your paint needs more care, take it to professionals (try an autobody shop) but it'll probably cost allot of money. I doubt anyone would wet sand and polish a car for under $500-$600. good luck getting it smooth and shiney.

Hey, if you want, I'll polish it on the weekend. I've got a high-speed polisher and required materials and I'm comfortable with wet-sanding and paint touch ups. Bring it over, I'll look at it. I'll polish it, if you like it, 100 bucks, if you don't like it, don't pay me. Fair deal? I can do it on Saturday. PM me for a phone number.

kisses
I(f you have great budget, you can give your car a new body paint. But if you got limited cash, wet-sanding can do good and if you know how to make it and if the scratches can be done with it.

There is really no need to wetsand a car with swirls, most of the time all the swirls can be buffed out with a compound on an orange pad followed up with a polish on a white pad, if the car has been heavily abused or left to oxidize over the years the clear could be quite thin and not all the swirls will come out.

Bowtie, don't you think you are selling yourself short at $100 bucks? Most details I do with a basic paint correction polish requires about 50-60 dollars in materials alone.

Agree with everyone above. Get a ROP for around 170-200. Get a mild abrasive compound and then a good polish. You need orange, white, and black pads.

I guess you would have to see the car to jidge what needs to be done to it. The paitn has a lot of swirls, but is still quite shiny but could be much shinier in my opinion. The paint also has a few home-made touch ups made by the prev owner who had no clue what the heck he was doing - he used one of those little nail-polish paint touch up things you can buy at newfie speed-n-sport and it looks terrible if you look all over the car to find the 3 or 4 spots he did that to.

Its a badass looking car from 5-6 feet away but id like to get those swirls out and bring up the shine a bit to make iut look better. I was hoping a nice polish job by someone with experience might even be able to blend in those shitty touch ups too.

I'll attach a few pics i got when i bought the car last week....they were taken at night in the garage and the cars been in for tranny work all week so i havent been able to get any newer ones.

Thanks for all the input.

Well if that's an older paint job from back in the day it's not going to be a base/clear 2 stage (I am going to assume because of the flames it was done more recently and is a base clear however), if it a single stage you will want someone who had dealt with a single stage polish before because the process is silightly different than a base/clear. They arn't really that much more difficult (some find them easier) but I can tell you they sure are a blast to polish! Singlestage when worked right shines beautifully and you have a little more room to correct swirling. You can make 60 year old single stage oxidized paint look like showroom with the right products.

As far as paint chips that have been filled, best bet with those is to get some fine grit sand paper (around 1200) and knock them down level with the paint and go over the area once again with a compound and then polish to get the luster back.

gen3novahonk
its not an orig paint job, from what i was told by the prev owner....the paint is 5-7 years old.

its a base/clear paintjob, not a single stage.

lowryder
That's what I figured, as soon as I seen the flames I could tell it was most likely a base/clear.

The paint looks to be in good shape, someone took care of it, that's for sure. The car looks fantastic. Most likely like someone probably took a brush to it, or a not so clean rag and wiped it down.

Nice thing about non factory paint job's is most of the time painters lay the clear on fairly heavy so there is more room to work with swirl correction.

Regardless black is a fun color to work with and I am willing to bet that most of those swirls could be eliminated, and you could use a vareity of products to work in a real nice deep wet look on that black paint.

Anytime I work with darker colors I love to get out as many swirls as possible and then seal the car up with a polymer sealent, then I like to move to a glaze, the glaze will remove any very minor imperfections that the polish didn't take care of and it will really make blacks and dark colors look a mile deep. To finish it up I like to hit the paint up with a quality wax like pete's 53 or natty's paste wax to protect and add the final luster.

If you want to get the products and try it yourself let me know, if you are wanting someone to do it I would love to work on that car but I am booked up for the next couple weeks.

Auto Details FTW!

send me a pm with your availability & stuff. Have you done alot of finishing work before? Sounds like you know your stuff.

thanks

lowryder
I don't work at a bodyshop but I like to think I know my stuff LOL...

I have done some members cars on 780 before and have done some higher end vehicles like newer Porsche 911's, BMW's, Vettes and such.

I have done quite a few finishing jobs in the past, lately in seems more than ever as I am constantly ordering in new product from e-shine and glimmerglass detailing LOL.

I would like to think I do Auto Details quality work at non Auto Details pricing :p

Good to know that not everyone is driven by the almighty dollar.

Some people just like to do quality work without charging a premium (all the time). Props!

(I'd like to make some beautiful welds/smooth glass panels, but until I'm perfect at it, I don't charge much either. Not implying anything about your skills, just saying people are motivated by different things other than money...)

Maybe you just like to see a car with swirls SHINE after you're done with it??

lowryder
To be 100% honest with you I am a diehard car/truck guy...I have always loved em.

When I see another fanatic who loves his car but doesn't have the time/knowledge or even the patience to bring the best shine to his baby I like to step up and help out :D

I wish I made a boat load doing details but I really don't, I always ensure that I am using the absolute best products out there and sometimes it will honestly take a few details JUST to pay off some of the products I purchased to use on OTHER peoples cars  I am always on autopia.org trying to find the latest and greatest...if I read a good review I gotta try it!

Lately some of the details I have been doing have been taking me 10-12 hours and I use anywhere from 50-80 dollars in product. Add in labor and the cost of running a shop (on the side after work) and I am working for peanuts, but when a guy comes up with a huge smile on his face never thinking his car/truck could look so good it makes it worth it.

Don't get me wrong, I don't lose money doing them, but I am definately not doing it to get rich...I would just rather polish and buff a car on a saturday than sit at home and do nothing.

Someone needs to gift you this...

Holy crap. Almost had a heart attack looking at the price for lifetime supply of glaze.

MESSAGE PSI on here he does weekend detailings that are just outta this world for cheap.

bowtie
Nah, I dont' think I'm selling myself short. Six hours or so at 14 bucks an hour, I bought the products in bulk. I don't use the top-of-the-line products since most people I detail for don't care if it takes me 5 hours rather than 6 hours to get the job done. But lowryder if you want to do it, do it. I just enjoy the work and could use the money.

lowryder
I was just amazed that you could do it for so cheap that's all. Even in bulk which I buy you are looking at around $30 dollars or so for two buffing pads and a clay bar, that's not counting your water, soap, wash mitts, compound, polish, sealant, glaze, wax, tire dressing, wheel sealent etc..etc..even in small quantities (say $ 3-4 bucks of each product) you are still looking at anywhere from 40-80 bucks just on product...

What sort of buffer are you using and what products are you using?

Don't get me wrong, I am not questioning your practices, I was just interested that's all.
