Gear grind? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Tylero
Hey,

Quick question. my 91 mr2 -> second gen turbo swap I get real bad grinding especially at higher rpms. 2-3 is probably the worst but goes away at low rpms (sometimes). Aswell sometimes I cant get it into reverse.

I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem? and how they fixed it.

I am thinking the gear syncro is worn, im guessing ill be having to put in a new transmission this winter. but if anyone can think of something else let me know

P.S as for what transmission it is the turbo transmission that was put it with the engine. (3SGTE)

You only get the grinding when you're shifting then, right? How's your clutch pedal feel? I had a slow leak in my clutch slave cylinder and when the fluid got low, I had the same problem. The resistance would start when the pedal was almost on the floor. I don't really think that'll be the problem - I think you're right, but it's worth checking. If it is, it'll be WAY cheaper than a new tranny or a rebuild.

Have you tried rev matching to see if the grinding goes away? That'll tell you for sure if it's the synchros. Besides, it might be useful to know where to be doing it in case they die completely while you're out & about.

Check your clutch pedal clevis to see if it's adjusted to spec.

Hmm, ya as for the clutch it doesnt seem any different from when I bought the car.

But ill check to see maybe I do have a leak, and ill check the adjustment as well, hopefully one of these might be a quick fix for this.

As for the rev matching I have tried didnt really notice much, but one thing I thought was weird is when the car is still just warming up the shifting is way smoother... seems a little weird to me, so Im not to sure what that could mean.

i seem to be having the same problems on my celica
upshifting from 1-2 above 3000 rpm grinds and downshifts grind if i dont coast/brake a little bit and slow down

as for reverse, if you shift into 5th and then reverse the grinding goes away
i think you can shift into almost any gear but 5th seems the fastest

I was wondering the same thing. I have a 91 (which was non turbo, but has a 3sgte engine and matching tranny in it.) and I notice when i shift especially first to second and or sometimes second to third (up and down) it grinds going into the gear. I It almost seems like it only does it sometimes. My clutch is fine, its pretty stiff and feels solid, but it almost seems like somethings not lining up properly in the shifter. because it feels like sometimes if i shift just the right way it shifts fine, but other times it grinds as it goes into gear. I never notice grinding while driving, only when the actual gear shift is made....

Sounds like you both need new synchros to me... Can't say I'm that surprised with the age of the cars. Not to mention the fact that I bet the tranny hasn't exactly been babied its entire life.

Crummy deal boys... I am in the exact same boat. Will have to get that looked at & replaced at some point down the road.

Tylero
Just a little info I adjusted my clutch... its better, ide try that first see if it improves at all.

worked for me more or less.
