Making it legal - Click HERE for Original Thread

So I'm looking at a honda del sol from here and I live in Phoenix, AZ. I figure I might have to do some work to get it to pass emissions but anybody know what other kind of work I'm going to have to do? I just called the dmv down here and they said that as long as I have the port of entry paperwork and the EPA/Federal motor vehicle safty sticker then I can get it registered for not a whole lot. But everybody I'm talking to is saying that would have to be the importer that would obtain those stickers? Anybody have info on this?

Thanks,
Aphotik_sol

*side note I'm also trying to get it so I can legally drive the car back to AZ from IC

If you mean a RHD vehicle that was imported from Japan in Canada, then I'm pretty certain that they would turn it away at the US border due to the fact that it isn't 25 years old or older.

You can get "in transit" permits in Alberta if you have proof of insurance, but I don't know how well this would go over when driving into the US.

It looks like I would have to find a Registered importer in the US to get it legal in the US since it's not over 25 years old. I'd have to have them help me make sure it meets all safety requirements. You wouldn't happen to know a Registered Importer in the US on the border would you?

No sorry, we've had many people from the US ask about our cars and to date not a single one has bought one from us.

U guys should find a registered importer in the us on the border to refer people to it might help us ppl in the US that want to buy from you but cant =\. I'm still looking and I'll post if I find anything for future US buyers :)

So I found the list of registered importers for the US but if it's not on the DoT's list of cars they take you pretty much have to crash test 2 then submit the results...

But if you buy a non working car/shell and fix/build it then you can get a title for it through the local MVD buy just going through their lvl 1 & lvl 2 inspections...

So my new question is: Does Import Concern ever get cars through their supplier that are just the shell or not running?

mx73someday
There isn't a specific channel for those kinds of cars, when we buy cars from auction they do become available from time to time.

If you guys ever run across a non working RHD del sol or a shell or front half for the RHD conversion let me know :)

actually I've been thinking.. we can't import a working car into the states but we can take not working cars in as "parts". So what if your supplier in japan was to drain all the fluids and take the battery out of the car? Would they be willing to do that?

I'm going to check on the laws here just to be sure but as long as it's imported as "parts" you could then build the car and get a VIN issued to it and it would just have to pass smog & general inspection........

Supposedly when we want to import a car to Canada for parts, it has to be so badly damaged as to convince Customs that it cannot be repaired.
