weird noise... - Click HERE for Original Thread

captain nismo
Like the title says. Just recently(last wednesday), my 89 240sx started to make a weird noise. The sound is coming from the engine bay, and it sounds like a clicking. The clicking occurs in unison with the rpm of the engine. Ex. as i accelerate, the clicking gets faster. Its fairly loud, as i can hear it with the windows up and the stereo playing low. Some guys on NICO think it might be the timing chain. Any other ideas out there guys?

Fucked valves or slight exhaust leak. Just my guess.

SRBURG13
Possible Timing chain, or, when was the last time you checked your oil???

DeathBy240
Does it rattle loud on start up? If so probably timing chain, but its more of a rattle than a click. My '89 240 clicks with the RPMs of the engine, heres my link from NICO. Hope it helps. I think its the valves in my car, but I'm dropping a new KA in soon....

Most likely valves

Check your oil Chris ;)

captain nismo
ok, :wtf: The noise went away all day yesterday and part of today, and then it came back loud and strong. Should i just take it in to see wtf is going on?

SRBURG13
I would assume so. Probably safer than sorry.

take your oil cap off and stick your index finger in and try to reach the front where the timing chain is....if u can move it.... :crying: chances r your chain guides broke...

180sx
more info !!!where is it coming from?? underthe valve cover??? front of the engine ??back??/ top??? bottom? and yah first of all check your oil make sure its not on low...!!! cuz it gets really loud if you are low on oil.

sil_eighty
no way the timing chain is a hard one to come buy if u haven't experienced it before......the sound bounces all over the engine bay.......

captain nismo
Well heres the update. The sound was getting louder and like Sil80 said, it was very hard to pinpoint. I added 2 litres of oil today and the noise has ceased for now. I hope that was all i had to do :fingersx:

sil_eighty
did u check yoru chain yet or what?

DeathBy240
Is it burning lots of oil?

BlueTurboEGG
I hate to be the one to say it, but I think it is a spun lower bearing dude...

but if I heard it, I could pinpoint it.

The chain will almost NEVER have problems unless it snaps, then it won't make any noise.

Adding oil stopped the noise huh?... Hmmmmmm.

sil_eighty
u ever owned a ka24e andy..... :P trust me you;ll here when the chain guides are broken..(made of plastic) the chain slaps aginst the timing cover...and if u leave it long enough it'll wear through something... the chain is the part that rarely ever breaks

TylerH
the engine likes to tick when it's low on oil......real low on oil

BlueTurboEGG
Ah, the chain guides. Forgot about those damn things.

Well, hopefully you've fixed the problem.
