Hey guys,

I decided to write my MLA on the silly rules regarding exhaust systems here in Alberta. I've given the letter below hoping some others will want to write in as well. Feel free to use this as a template but I do suggest changing it a bit so they don't all look alike.

You can find MLA addresses here: http://www.gov.ab.ca/home/index.cfm?page=3...=398&item=17623

Dear: Sir,

Hello.  I would first like to extend my thanks to you and the government of Alberta for looking into the auto insurance industry.  Hopefully more equitable coverage rates will result from this.  May I recommend some other auto regulations that could use revising as well?

I wish to discuss Section 46, and specifically Section 46(4), of the Alberta Highway Traffic Act (AHTA).  The believed intent of this section is to control the noise emitted from an internal combustion engine.  Many of us who drive sport compact cars feel that regulation 46(4) is outdated and should be refined to take into account present muffler technologies.  One of the most popular ways for car enthusiasts to increase the horsepower of their cars is to increase the diameter of the car’s exhaust port.  A number of aftermarket kits and parts are sold legally in Alberta to do this.  Currently, installing these kits is in direct violation of the AHTA.  However, it is now possible to open or widen an exhaust outlet with a minimal change in noise thanks to new muffler technologies.  Section 46 of the AHTA should be amended to reflect these new technologies.

One possible solution would be to change the act to necessitate a regulated noise limit in decibels (db).  This would be a vast improvement over the existing regulation for three reasons. 1) It reflects what the section is specifically supposed to be regulating- sound emissions.  2) It gives a clear target of what is an acceptable noise emission from an automobile (say 90 db). 3) It is less open to interpretation thus allowing a more even handed enforcement policy causing less frustration to motorist and police alike.

Thank you and please let me know any comments or questions you may have on this subject.

Sincerely,

<Your Nam>
Cc. Ralph Klein

Notice I cc. big Ralph as well. Never hurts to go to the big man himself to get a ball rolling. :fingersx:

Cheers

I think this is great!!
Way to get things started Kermit.

Though I'm not very familiar with the AHTA/TSA (Traffic Safety Act?) there MAY be some points you may have to review/change.
Such as the legality of aftermarket exhaust kits...are they really LEGAL to drive around with on the streets???

Kevwood
I think the point he's making is that the exhaust sytem can be PURCHASED legally, yet it is illegal to install it on the vehicle and use it on city roadways. It's like all the pot head hemp stores around town, they can legally sell crack pipes but... you get the picture I'm sure. :)

Anyways, good luck Kermit, hope it gets somewhere, someday.

Good job Kermit. Never underestimate our little green friends! While your at it could you write your MLA about banning those godawful loud Harley Davidson motor-bikes? Honestly I don't know why they're allowed to pollute the air with their loud neandrathal roar. No import is even half as loud as them!

99atlantic
oh god, please don't legalize fart cannons.

i find it funny, in 4yrs. of running around with my mustang i never once got a ticket for it's exhaust- off-road w/ resontators....measured at 118dbs! i even had a cop at a light ask me to rev it up, he watned to hear what it sounded like because he had a 'stang as well

see i don't find that funny at all, i've gotten over $500 in exhaust tickets in less than one year, and i know a huge reason is because my car is a Honda and not a Ford. It's not funny it's fuckin bullshit.

for the record i am never pulled over for speedinh or illegal turns or anything, just random checks.

yaimports are just getting hammered

You may not be happy with what you get, if the laws are changed.Getting harressed for a larger pipe sucks, but if they (police) go out and buy decibel meters were all dead in the water. Noise regulations fall under federal regalations and if im right are 83 decibels for cars and 93 for light trucks. I bought my own decibel meter a few months ago. My car, my sons rx7 and half his friends have failed at over 100 decibels. And 100 decibels isnt very loud to most people. And if you were to be stopped and had your car decibeled, you would have to bring it in to police and have it checked . You probably would have to spend big bucks having to put it back to a level witch you could pass. Do we really want this............ :dunno:

We just want Harley-Davidson's fart knocking mufflers reduced to civilized levels like the rest of humanity. -_-

Ladies & Gents;

First let me applaud "kermit" for his initiative in exercising his rights to challenge the laws in this province. This is the "checks & balances" process that keeps the law makers from running away w/ the justice system. I am a very strong believer in upholding the rights of the people so once again ... way to go "kermit".

I would like to add though that "monztur's" comments are very valid and once again it's a case of - be careful what you wish for.

For anyone else wishing to follow "kermit's" lead, I would like to make a suggestion. The Alberta Highway Traffic Act has not existed since May 19th, 2003. It has been replaced w/ the Traffic Safety Act & its associated Regulations. The specific law I think you wish to comment on is under the Traffic Safety Act - Vehicle Equipment Regulations Section 61.

I have to stay neutral on my feelings about this specific law as I am employed to investigate & enforce the laws of Canada & Alberta. I am also a member of the public & hate being wakened at 3:00 am by someone ripping past my house w/ seemingly non-existent exhaust. This goes for motorcycles w/ baffles removed, trucks w/ worn out bottle mufflers, $500 beaters w/ rusted out pipes, & hi-perf autos w/ - how do you say ... fart cannons.

Keep the shiny side up (if you can't figure out which side that is ... WASH YOUR CAR!!)
Jimbo

99atlantic
^^^ ahhh, i see Jimbo did not mention 'muscle' cars (i.e., mustang/camaros) w/ off-road exhausts such as mine or SLP loudmouth, hehehe

Whats a 99 Atlantic? Maybe Im dumb but yea and is the Infinity G35 really the new Skyline? or Am I just being fed with a bowl of crap thnx

99atlantic
99atlantic- used to have a 1999 mustang, atlantic blue :)

yea, g35C is the new skyline. it's badged as the skyline in japan, in north america it's called the G35.

Don_the_dragon
Thanks for the clarification cuz I thought it was some kinda exotic car, but turns out to be some mean american muscle not a big fan but its all good. well have fun with ur Infinity which happens to be a nice ass car

Curtass
Call me ignorant, but how the hell would the g35 be the new Skyline? That is total B.S. The G35 is the luxury version of the 350z if I'm not correct, and the 350z is not a new skyline.

incubusnb
actually, the name "Skyline" is officially dead and has been split up into the R series Family Sedan(R35), G Series Luxury Car (G35), and the GT-R, all three are based around the same Chassis, but are different cars with different specs.

i don't have a link to prove it, but the R Series should be released in the next year and the GT-R still hasn't been confirmed for North America (but probably will be soon)

I'll add the link again to clarify.

That is a sad sight when the skyline turns into some luxury car. I thought they were releasing an R35 some time. Strange. Hopefully the next real skyline will be an original "skyline"

Skylines will stay that way. Itst he next GT-R thst is gonna kick ass.
