Engagement Rings and Stuff like that - Click HERE for Original Thread

I had someone ask me a very valid question, and no, it's not because they're cheap.  What is the point of a honking diamond ring to prove to someone you want to be engaged?  Shouldn't just saying it and knowing it be enough, or are we so materialistic or perhaps even unstable that we NEED to have something to symbolize and stablize our commitment?  On the flip side, isn't it nice top have tradition to have a ring given and received as a token or symbol of love?  Is it all symbolism, and if so, why have it?

REFLUX
i totally agree with you
why diamonds too???
stupid DeBeers, i was reading an article on diamonds and it said that BEFORE DeBeers came around with "A diamond is forever, how else to spend 2 months salary" ppl used to buy OTHER, equally as rare/precious gems
i think stuff like sapphires/rubies stuff like that
emeralds

but if i were to ask someone to marry me, the ring helps a LOT in "shock value", i'd pay a lot for their happiness/experience

Let's face it, Diamonds are a guys way of showing te rest of the world what his girl means to him without being there.

I hate to say it, but that's how 90% of the population out ther guage a mans love, it's sickening, but what are you going to do?, you can't change society.

ps. Spence Diamonds Sucks.

Talented
Such a scam.  How do women show their love then?

REFLUX
Andy: you're getting married right? my gf's brother-in-law bought his engagement ring in the states, where you headed?
thought Spence was "the place" to go for diamonds?

one more thing, wat do you guys think of PROMISE RINGS???
not engagement, it's the ring BEFORE engagement....wtf is the point in THAT???
i always thought engagement ring was the "promise to marry" kind of thing??

I never understood promise rings either..... although engagment rings are nice... and do not have to be a carat or more......  As long as it is a symbol of your love and devotion.

i worked at Spence Diamonds *hahahahah*  It was okay to work there...well...sorta...not sure what it's like to be a customer there though!  *grins*  I think the only reason guys are so bitter is coz traditionally, they're the ones shelling out the cash to buy the ring.  But that's just coz its an age-old tradition when women weren't allowed to do a whole heck a lot of anything!  Bet you they wouldn't be complaining if it were the other way around!  *hahahah*  If you don't like it, find yourself a modern, MODERN day woman, where maybe she'll propose to you!! *HAHAHAH*

REFLUX
that would be weird...........
i guess it's just SOOOOO imbedded in our minds that it's the "man's job" to propose

weird but kinda cool
