Official 08/09 HOCKEY Thread - Click HERE for Original Thread

EK9Hatch
Thought I would make an official Hockey thread for the 08/09 season. It doesn't have to be Oilers news only, but more of a general hockey thread.

Speaking of the Oil....

What do you guys think will happen with Roli?...considering Garon will most likely be our number 1.

Jamie

Beerking
I AM SO FREAKING EXCITED FOR THE OIL, I AM GOING TO SPLOOGE MYSELF.

Except there is a little to much hype and expectations are really high, I hope this does not backfire like the last two seasons.

Graphicdude
In the paper today it said Rolli is the the 2nd string Goalie and he has accepted that role. I think he will be traded before X-mas.

I think the Oilers are as deep as they every will be and the result could be a strong finish and a nice spot in the playoffs. I think, so long as the injury bug stays the fuck away from them, that they can win the Division this year.

The team looks awesome on paper but only time & coaching will tell if it works out as well as it looks. I hope they find success again. I don't want to be watching the Oliers in April fighting for their lives to make the playoffs.

I want to see them coast through the last 20 games fighting for home ice in the playoffs.

I still say, within 5 years the Oilers will have a cup. Should be a great season. :fingersx:

95EagleAWD
Roli won't be traded. No one is going to pick up a 3 million a year backup goalie.

EK9Hatch
I'm hoping and expecting a lot from them this year, but who knows what could happen.

Injuries have been such a big issue in the past, hopefully not this year.

We just picked up that Giant...anyone know his stats?

Jamie

Arikara1985
Honestly, I once again don't see the Oilers making the playoffs again. They are as badly coached and ran as the Leafs are.

EK9Hatch
What do you guys think about Vancouver naming Luongo team Captain?

I don't really see why its such a big deal....but I guess it breaks the rules.

Here's the news article...

It breaks all the rules...what an attention getting move...it's not even really news worthy...ok so you made goalie the captain...so

Don't see how can he be a captain other than give some pep talk in the locker room before games. He can't skate up for face offs...what is He going to do excuse himself from his net to go argue with the ref? Or skate up to hear the reasoning behind the ref's decision?

This is just silly

He is a figurehead like the queen! No actual duties that Captains are supposed to have. His Assistants are getting the shaft, all the work without the title.

EK9Hatch
What do you guys think about some of the new rule changes?

I really like having the face off in the offensive zone when a penalty is called.

I did not know about this one, interesting we will see how it goes.

As for Louy, what a bunch of crap. It is a total shaft to guys like Mitchell and Ohlund. Just b/c the guy is really good and has some leadership on the dressing room does not mean he shouls be captain. Sad really, but oh well. It could work in their favor.

i like the rule in which they will not go to commercial break when a team ices the puck. anything for less commercials:thumbup:

350z_soulja
i think a big hurdle and important part of the season will be right from the get go when the oilers have 7 games at home of a possible 23 games (oct-nov).

if they start the season like last nights game against flames, good-bye oilers, training camp is next september!

What the hell are you on?

You think Ethan Moreau is Captain of the Oilers because of the 80 points he puts up every season?

Captaincy is ALL about leadership on and off the ice, not just about points.

As for the Canuckles, they've been rocking the pre-season. I thought they'd be pretty terrible this year, since they DON'T have any leadership or depth. They decimated the Flames last night.

The Oilers better get their shit together real quick.

I am on realism.

I never said that points makes a captain (where did you even come to that conclusion, read before you type).

There are a lot of goalies out there that have DRESSING room leadership, but NONE of them have ON ICE leadership. c'mon man, is Louy gonna skate to the bench everytime the boys heads are down and give them a good speeach, no. There is a reason no other teams have made their golies captain, no logic. Just b/c he is now designated the captain does mean things are going to change, he will still do the same as he did before (encouragement wise).

Like I said, it is slap in the face to the other players who have earned the right, it is like saying none of them are good enough for it.

first-time
They gave him the C so he doesn't bail when his contract expires after next season. The canucks are terrible and they would be the WORST team in the NHL if Luongo left (IMO).

EK9Hatch
Our conference imo is going to be the toughest and closest Conference in the NHL. If the Oilers want to make the play offs, they will have to be extremely good. Both Vancouver and Calgary is making us look bad. Thankfully, its just pre season and lots can change.

Jamie

ChromeDragon
Actually it's a VERY smart move on Vancouver's part. Normally a goalie is not allowed to cross the blue line unless there is a time-out called or they are changing goalies. Being the captain he will be allowed to come to centre ice to talk to the refs and because of this he will be able to give his team breathers if needed in the case of icing, etc.

As far as that team goes though, it makes perfect sense for Luongo to be their captain. He has a great grasp of the ice compared to most goalies and is regularly directing players in the defensive zone. He's definitely one of the more senior players and his teammates have boundless respect for him.

Good move on the Canucks' part if you ask me.

blondy
I think it is a poor choice...he is too much of a "me" player to properly support and lift the spirits of teammates

From some of his past actions to me he is far far from being a leader. His comments when he was with Isle about what a "waste" it was for him to "kill himself making saves", while his mates couldn't even win a game anyways told me what kind of character he was

I suppose there's nothing wrong with it...unless you are one of his teammates

On the same day that the Vancouver Canucks named him team captain he came away from practice with a groin injury

:)

No he won't, Matt. That's exactly why goaltenders can't be named Captain and can't wear the "C".

Luongo, Captain or not, still can't cross the blue line. His duties on ice will fall to the Alternates.

blondy
Rule 14d in the NHL Rule Book

No playing Coach or playing Manager or goalkeeper shall be permitted to act as Captain or Alternate Captain

So technically I guess Vancouver is following the rule...Luongo will not wear the C or 'act' as captain as it pertains to on ice play..... but he is officially their captain

Isn't the reasoning something like a delay of game penalty if the goaltender crosses the blue line or red line...because waiting for the goaltender to skate all the way from his net to get the low down on a call and then skate all the way back...can't remember exactly

DoubleDown
Luongo is UFA after this year, they gave him a fake C in hopes he'll re-sign... I thought that was obvious to everyone. All the on-ice Captain duties are delegated to alternates.

Vancouver's in the shitter if they don't resign Luongo.

Graphicdude
Luongo won't resign in Vancouver if they don't go deep into the playoff this year. And I don't blame them. When he arrived there, they had a good team and from an outsiders perspective, the team looked like it was on the path to a cup. And now that they lost Naslund and the tam looks like a bunch of rooks lead by the swedish gaylord tag team, I would be pissed and not want to stay there unless something dramatic happens in April.

Karan
Lets Go Rangers. Hope my boys in blue have little more of a productive year than last season after bit of a re-tooling.

EK9Hatch
Sens are looking pretty decent so far. I still think that Spezza and Heatley are one of the deadliest combos in the game.

Jamie

first-time
Rangers looked rad yesterday and today. I know it was only TB but still. The Naslund/Gomez/Drury line looked sick.

jarago
I'm really liking how the oilers 2nd line are seeing each other on the ice...I think they will do well this year when they settle in.

fugumerkur
I had the joy of attending the first game of the season at home ice and it was awesome!

A little bit of passing needs to be worked on but for the chemistry to be this good and solid right off the bat! I see good things this year and it should be worth watching every single game!

Garon has to hold up.

the lines have to stay solid , injury free and have crisp clean passing.

Just my opinion really!

Can;t wait for the upcoming Calgary game!!!! Im; so excited!

THUD
I had no idea Vancouver made there goalie the Captain. thats a great move infact he has got to have the best seat he knows what he needs and who is his biggest threats.
I hope the Oil can stay very injury free till the playoffs and beyond like Ethan monroe and a few others just so Mactavish does not have to make litterly 2 teams into 1 half way thru the season and succeed.
I only got to watch a few mins of the hockey game thru out the night and what I saw was great they looked pumped and ready to kick ass all year.
As for Calgary I really hope they stop relying on just 2 major players to get them anywhere this year and step up there game as I do many of Canada's team's cause no matter what we need the cup back up here this year.

So when will and how long will our teams big slump that all teams have during the year last? will we just have a couple of 3-4 game looses in a row or will we go for gold and make it to 12?

Beerking
Oilers vs flamers....should be a dandy.

I hope MacIntyre lays another smack down.

Graphicdude
I wonder if this game will be filled with fist-a-cuffs? Maybe not. I think they will save it for Hockey Night in Canada :D

OIL WIN!

i went to hudsons for the game yesterday at the u of a campus and we got to guess when the oilers would score thier first goal.... my friend got closest and we got LUXURY BOX TICKETS to todays game! amazing.

fugumerkur
I'm off to the second half of the Battle of Alberta! I"m so stocked. hit up both home games so far this year and I'm loving it.!

Can we keep this Streak goin! I'm knocking on wood for a wicked game tonight!

Calgary is definitely throw the body but we'll win it in the end!

I'd bet my Mustang on it!

disclaimer: Fugu is not actually betting his mustang, he is just that sure that the 2008/2009 Oilers team is just that fricken good he would willingly put his car on the line over a battle of alberta home and home series!
GO OILERS GO.

95EagleAWD
OH MY GOD COGLIANO!!!!

jarago
its a diff team this year...sick playing and awesome goaltending by garon

fugumerkur
What a game!!

First period the Flames Fans were heckling us so bad. They were mouthy and obnoxious.! 2nd period rolls around and they sobered up quick to our KIPPR chanting and 3 goals in 4 minuts!!! Priceless.!

Through the mob leaving the Coliseum the flames jerseys were heckled and put down like it was a game 7 win over San jose on whyte ave!
I LOVE IT!

Cogliano was awesome!!

Fazda
nice to have 4-0 record going right now. hopefully they can keep up the solid play, i really didn't know what to think coming into this season but so far i am incredibly impressed, lot of guys are stepping up to the plate and they look fast out there!

keep the wins coming

95EagleAWD
Unfortunately, there's been no solid play. We've been lucky to win all 4 games.

However, that's a big change from last year. At least we're winning the one goal games instead of losing them.

The team is coming together nicely. Cole, Pisani and Cogs were awesome tonight, and I jumped off the couch when Moreau scored.

:D

blondy
Really can't compare this year's Oilers to....any other year's Oilers.

This is a entirely different team and am liking what I see and as Eagle said...it's not that we are playing really great but at least we are taking the win!

Was a little surprised that Kiprusoff was again in the net...oh well :D

Sheldon? Hmm already an injury...thought we would get a couple months from him before he gets hurt

And Bertuzzi is playing just the way I want him to all season...skating to the penalty box skating to the penalty box skating to the penalty box skating to the penalty box

Good game !!

Some good goals and some good fights, and calgarys berTuZie seems to be out shinein (ingla) (Ignigma) a bit.

He was decent when it mattered.

The 2 first goals I don't think Garon or JDD would have had them, or they would have been brilliant saves at the least.

The 3rd was a little weak.

Not like the rest of the team helped him out at all.

Bluestreak
Roli isn't to blame. You can't win a game by scoring 0 goals.

No one had chemistry tonight, they were all over the place.

EK9Hatch
The thing I hate about Roli is...

I find him very inconsistent. Sometimes he makes saves standing on his head and its unreal... then, he lets in a half assed shot from the blue line.

Yup. No shortage of talent on that team with Kane, Toews, Sharp, Havlat (when he's good), etc.

The only questionable part may be their goaltending, but Khabibulin seems like he's doing alright so far.

You know who they sound like on paper?

The Oilers.

We'll see how it goes against Colorado tonight. If we walk out of this road trip above .500, then I'll consider that we'll go all the way to a playoff spot. If we don't, we're certainly making it harder on ourselves.

Bluestreak
The thing is the Oilers are a team that like to do things the hard way.

I think the long time off may have thrown them off a bit, we'll see how their skating legs are tonight against the Avs.

EK9Hatch
Damn...another loss.

4-2 now

Jamie

Beerking
Well the Macblender has gone to work. Nillson is on the 1st line with horc and hemmer and cole is finally playing right wing where he should be with moreau and pouliot.

Lets hope they spank the canucks tomorrow, lets see some goals (lots of them!)

Beerking
Me thinks that this team needs to learn how to start scoring. BAH!!!!!!!! So sad, why cant we score!!! same shit every year.:dunno:

BigTrucker
Your right, same shit every year.

It doesn't matter if we have new players, returning players or junior players, they just don't score a lot under the coaching of MacT.

blondy
3 goal lead and we finish up 5 - 4 was thinking we were going to lose this one

So now we go to Columbus with a two game win streak and put a stop to Philly's winning streak

Sheldon looked good !!

Better they do it now...they down the road...fighting for a play off spot

But what the heck was that last night? They played as if it was their first time on skates

Crazy puck bounces...players falling all over the place

Sheldon again looked good ahh he has his moments when he pulls something stupid but the 5 on 3 with Shawn was absolutely marvelous...but then again our power play just sucks...this pass pass pass pass stand still pass pass pass it really pisses me off and at games even the other fans are getting ticked by it too and yelling SHOOT!! Every year I question who the hell brought that to Oiler's hockey and why is it still used every season

Pass pass pass  shoot the puck!!! You have a chance to score...
But just passing the puck

And Roly well think they better get all ideas of trading him out of their heads...yah he played really great last night and really crappy...but at least he knows what is going on...at the very least he does a better job of trying to keep the puck out of the net than the players do getting the puck to the other end of the ice

:)

Hemsky has scored some dirty goals the last bunch of games. I can't stand watching New Jersey and Minnesota game. So boring...

On the other hand jeff played solid in net and our power play was getting a bit better. Although we only had 2. We're moving the puck quicker and getting more shots.

Beerking
OMG Hemsky is finally bringing it, and bringing it he is.

Jamie

I figured NYR would take the game...but then I changed my mind and figured edm would take it... (I have lundquist in my hockey pool, removed him before the game). Might have been a good choice if they keep playin the way they are.

EK9Hatch
Considering their play lately, I'm still surprised they can take a 4-3 record away from this road trip. Hopefully they continue to play this way. Playing Toronto and Colorado isn't going to be easy either.

EK9Hatch
2 zip Oilers!

deslauriers = solid

hemsky scores the SO winner, I'm a happy boy

Karan
Rangers blew that game in the first....they looked completely asleep back there! Its a miracle they came back to get a point. Although it took two fluke regulation goals from the Oilers to win that one.

EK9Hatch
Deslauriers did look really good. I think he tried to make that last save in the Shoot out look a little too flashy...but it was excellent either way.

Jamie

Fazda
ya i would have to agree on the last save in the SO, its looked a little Bill Ranford to me, but a great win none the less, he is solid between the pipes

Beerking
lol, why can't the rookie flash the leather?? He knew he had the game won as soon as the puck left Naslund's stick. I would, you would...that is confidence! I like it, well done JDD!

Just do not be over confident.

EK9Hatch
Not looking good :( Leafs up 3-2.

It was embarrassing though. A team that is about 3,500km away from home gets cheers when they score??? WTF?

I think they Maple Leaf fans were more loud at Rexall then the Oilers fans. Many times during the game the crowd started booing because you could hear "Lets go Leafs, lets go!"

Jamie

grego
I was at the game last night, and there were definitely more Toronto fans than Edmonton fans. Or maybe the Toronto fans just cheered louder. I had 2 "Alberta Sailors" sitting next to me (that's what they called themselves since they were from out east and working on the oil patch) Had some interesting conversation with them, they were both "DIE HARD" Leaf fans, but this was the first game they have ever been to, and they 30, and 52 years old. So I told them they didn't sound very die hard to me, they started spouting off complete bs stats about the leafs, saying the oilers never made it past the first round in the last 20 years...

Now, I'm in no way an Oiler fan, or Toronto fan, I'm a hockey fan first, and an Avalanche fan second. But the complete idiocy of them, and the other toronto fans around us really changes my outlook on leaf fans. I didn't mind them before, but now I despise them.

These die hards didn't even know that Jason Blake has recovered from leucemia, and after he assisted the 4-2 goal (i think) they spouted "NOT BAD FOR A GUY WITH CANCER HEYYYY"

All in all an entertaining game to watch, glad I went for free, I would have hated to pay to sit next to those guys for 2.5 hours.

I thought the Oilers came out completely flat but they will bounce back.
My Oiler Recommendation:
Trade Garon. why? Because we don't know if he will re-sign with the oilers at the end of the season, and he has value right now. Trade him for a legitimate second line center who can win draws, or a young PF type.
JDD and Roli will share the starting job, and when Roli retires JDD should be in shape to take the reigns of the team. The kid looks great in net, very confident.

/end rant.

YEs that was sad, but what can you do when most of the world is Laughs fans? It is the choice and mistake they have to deal with. Everyone cheers for them b/c they think they are being cool. Ya we lost, sucks hard, but if it means that next time we beat them in front of their home crowd and embarras them, as we ride to the playoffs and they miss them again, so be it.

Toronto is fail city, nothing to be proud about there.

Bluestreak
The same thing happens when Vancouver comes to town as well. I'm sure though that the Leafs not having been here in awhile contributed to the crowd volume.

Oilers sucked last night, they play a decent 1st period, then fall asleep the rest of the game. WTF?

Fazda
way to many leaf fans, that actually really pissed me off, so much for our fan base in our home town! fuck the leafs and toronto.

but ya we did suck last night,

Beerking
ACtually I got a real big beef with horcoff, this guys sucks!!1 Money getting to your head much buddy? Get off the ice, poor excuse for an All Star. Him and Pisani can piss off, as for Hemsky and Moreau, thank you for acutally playing well (above expecation for Moreau).

Worth money being paid:
-Hemsky
-Moreau
-Souray

NOT worth money being paid:
-Horcoff
-Pisani
-Cole (get your shit together too)

Hurray for sophmore slump too. Hopefully these boys will get the gears gowing, maybe Gagner just needed to get that first one, we will see.:fingersx:

EK9Hatch
I know that a lot of the volume for leafs fans last night is due to the number of East Coasters living here in Edmonton. But its still homosexual. I'm a East Coaster, but I love the Oilers...the Leafs have sucked for years and will continue to do so.

As for our players, one guy that is really starting to impress me with his play this year is Hemsky. We all know he has always possessed amazing talent, but in the past he seemed to almost be scared to shoot the puck.

I find he is shooting A LOT more, and in doing so is not only scoring, but creating good scoring opportunities for other players.

Hemsky is diff this year because he actually is shooting...he's not just stick handling for tip-ins on the net, which is what I'm used to seeing him do. He is shooting alot more...and with pucks actually going in his confidence is boosting.

The TO fans were all over the place last night...reminded me of when you go see Montreal/Oiler or even Colorado/Oiler games

Beerking too bad I didn't see your reply till now hahaha that would have been a good come back...I took my fair share of mocking today...

We did have a 2 game win streak ;) and then we go and lose to Toronto...maybe that third jersey is more a curse seems we lean towards losing when wearing those

What do you think about Brian Burke rumored to go to the Leaf's ??

I don't know the Leaf's are already doing a rebuild and up to now not so terribly shabby I don't know if they should even entertain the thought of bringing him back

???

He's not all that really...anyways Fletcher seems to be doing okay with them

:)
