winter storage? - Click HERE for Original Thread

So for those who have stored their Rx-7's during winter, whats the best method? Any tips ? Lets hear em.

Transporter
i will be driving mine..but if i would park i would start by putting it in garage and covering it with car cover cloth

Here is how I stored MY car last winter

Don't you need to start it every so often..?? what's the dilly on that if someone with more expertise would care to elaborate. (for the older guys, Dilly = ~deal) :)

 ok fine i get the point... im the old guy... thats just mean... rotories are very sensitive to storage because the rotorhousings can rust.... so if you plan on putting your baby away for the entire winter the best thing to do is pull the plugs and put a squirt of light oil into each rotor housing and roll the engine over by hand four or five rotations the put the plugs back in and put it in the storage spot without statring it again till spring.
in spring pull the plugs and turn the engine over for 10 to 20 seconds with the starter to purge the excess oil and put the plugs in and get it started. it will smoke badly at first but it will protect your engine from harmfull rust and the efects of dried up carbon deposits locking up your engine. also it is impotant if possible to put it somewhere dry. i leave mine out side under the snow... not the best location but its what i have. in a dry shop would be much better.

My personal preference would be to take it down to nice warm location like Arizona...I guess I can dream....

But just to add to Kruzen guy's comments...If you do decide to start it every month or so instead of putting in the oil as the Mr. Kruisin' say. Make sure you let the engine warm up fully...to normal operating temperature. Right Sir Cruzin'?

4kruzn
im sorry did you say sir or senior? but yes if you choose to not lube up the engine i would run the car for about a half hour at least once per month. but im kinda old so i am alowed my ecentricities. :(

Al36rx7
...Sir...of course....If I have time when I'm up in the park tomorrow, I'll give you a call.

it harms the engine to make it run only once a month, read that on a bmw forum :)

i'll put automatic tranny oil in the engine, like 4kruzn said

you should fill your gaztank and put an additive,
cover the car,
put the car on blocks, it helps the suspension
remove battery
(ill be also removing engine for rebuilt purpose :D )

now
Do not put trani fluid into a rotary for winter storage!
Just use 10w30 etc or buy a can of spray from a snowmobile shop,
its made for long term storage and will not damage the oil
control o rings like trani fluid.

meh, I start my car every 2 weeks while it is being stored. No problems yet...

All I know is that last year I didn't start it for 2 1/2 months during winter and the coolant seals in the upper intake manifold decided to "shrivel up" and create havok.

Was it because I didn't start it? Was it because I was starting it and stopped? Was it because I only started it every 2 weeks. Who knows....but I know I will be running it every 2 weeks as usual. Last thing I need are those oil/coolant seals going all stupid on me again.

now
my cosmo was parked unstarted for 3 years and never had
any problems with leaks other than the front cover gasket that
leaked oil from day one (mazda rebuilt)
when i pulled this motor apart the only thing that looked
bad from all that sitting was the apex seals had rust on them,
but they were not stuck, just didn't seal well, but i am sure
if I would have run it for a while the rust wouldn't have been a
problem either.
