Tofu - Click HERE for Original Thread

just wondering if this is a good source of protein for building muscle? I heard its high in protein and its how vegetarians get their protein, but how much protein is in one serving? and how big is a serving? :dunno:

Insomniac
damn man, www.google.com

:D

Miss Nikki Sixx
I assume by Tofu you mean SOY protein. So knowing the serving quantities depends on the brand of tufo you buy. How much you should be consuming? I guess that should not change, it's irrelevant where your protein source comes from.

I know some forms of soy product lack adequete amounts of amino acids, specifically CYSTEINE and METHIONINE

But to quantify protein content:

Soya bean contains 43 gms of protein per 100 gms
And, 19.5 gms of fat, 21gms of carbohydrate and provides 432 kcal per 100 gms.

How that stacks up versus other protein sources? I have no idea.

Thanks for the info Nikki :)

....i didnt know there were different kidns of tofu!....the kind im talking about is that stuff u can buy in like a icecream bucket in chinatown? know the kind im talking about?

Forget the # of grams in soy beans and amount of adequate amino acids. It's moot.

What you need is the amount of protein in tofu, which is processesed food, not the raw bean.

You're looking at 2-3 grams of protein per oz of tofu, the firmer the tofu, the more protein!

Flex
Its not the best form of protein for building muscle. Tofu is very good for you but not the best for what your looking for. And Miss Nikki is bang on about the amino acids. You need those for muscle building.

One of the best forms of protein for muscle growth is good ol cottage cheese. Taken at night is the best time for it as well as it its very easy for your body to digest and it has alot of the amino acids needed for proper digestion of protein. And its cheap compared to buying protein powders.

Talk when you know. Protein is made up of amino acids.

Um, hello???

Where do you think the protein in tofu comes from?? SOY BEAN, so that point is not trivial.

To simplify things, pick up the container of tofu product, turn it to the part of nutritional value, and simply read the protein content!! hehe that should be easier. But the simple fact that it lacks amino acids (Loose: the building blocks of protein) doesn't seem right.

When did reading become such a challenging task? It's pretty clear if you follow the quotes who I am refering to.

I was refering to that mofo Loose

its okay bud......its okay :grouphug:

Oh yeah, I forgot to add that I actually use a Soy based protein powder. It's really yummie and a good source of vitamins and proteins.. but to solely replace my protein intake with that would not be good, or as a weight gaining source, again, I'm sure there are way better sources.

I think Soy has been questionable in terms of body building, but " still like the old fashioned source of protein a DAMN GOOD STEAK! ;)

And can anyone tell me why Miss Nikki Sixx is still a "Miss" ie: not married? :D

s2oooR
no no.....i usually have that tofu stuff before i go to bed, thats why i ask....im not replacing it as my main source of protein.....

Flex
Sorry Miss Nikki....didnt mean to bark at ya.....but since your little statement was below my quote I thought you meant me...... :D

Even a steak is not the easiest form of protein for your body to digest. The easiest and one that has tons of vits, minerals and amino acids is cottage cheese....and its cheap.

I think cottage cheese and a good whey protein drink will be your best bet along with a good diet for muscle building.

BlueTurboEGG
Steak may not be the easiest, but it sure is one of the most pleasurable :)

As for cottage cheese, well, if I can get past the taste  I'm sure it would be good.

s2oooR
why how much cottage cheese are u talking about? Doesnt cottage cheese have alota fat in it too?

you can get skim, 1% or 2% cottage cheese. Look at the protein and guage it from there. Dont take in more the 30 grams at a sitting and then guage how much you want to add into your diet per day. But you dont have to add it all as cottage cheese. A good whey protein powder to, then your not eating a load of cottage cheese a day.
