It's called "innovation". Maybe you've heard of it. 3M allows it's employees to spend up to 15% of each workweek on side projects funded by the company. Post-it notes came up this way, in addition to thousands of useless but patented products, techniques, materials, etc.
Yes, it may seem retarded but it gets their name engraved into your brain.
