Rust... - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hey everybody.
I just wanted to know if anyone has any experience with taking away, stopping the spread of rust?

Got a car with some rust <!--emo&:nervous:--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/nervous.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':nervous:'><!--endemo--> on the suspension components in the rear, and various bolts and such on the underside of it.

any help is appreciated.

Thanks all

frost
Rust on Suspension sounds like trouble.

If you have a dremel just grind that rust away and spray over it.

hmmmm... has anybody ever used that rust check stuff from the auto stores?
or this stuff... <a href="http://www.rustcheck.com/rkiller.htm" target="_blank">http://www.rustcheck.com/rkiller.htm</a>
or this stuff...

you "apparently" don't have to sand... just put it on top... <!--emo&--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''><!--endemo-->
but i don't really know... <!--emo&:cry:--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cry.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':cry:'><!--endemo-->

From what I've heard, POR-15 is the stuff to go with.  Not pretty but is very successful in stoping rust.

I plan on spraying my manifold with it.  Apperently it goes on without any prepping required.

I see. yeah, on that site it says it works better on rough surfaces too, so just right onto the rusted part itself is best.

I've only seen this stuff online, and not in any Canadian Tire...
and from the dealer list on the por15 site, the nearest place is in Red Deer?

Where could I go to purchase this?

Markis
Wow Red Deer?

I consider that pretty close.  I thought you could only get it online.  Let me know how it goes.

You can purchash this from Canadian Tire or Parts Source (same people).

Does it work? I sprayed this on my suspension componets before winter as a quick fix (gave winter beater to Sis to drive). So I really couldn't work on the car <!--emo&:(--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':('><!--endemo-->. It's not such a surprise in Alberta since they spray rocks and salt on the roads here.

I'll know in 2 weeks when I start to take apart the suspension to check for worn parts for replacment before the season for racing starts.

It's just a quick fix IMO. Not really a solution. Better off doing it right - sand and repaint.

Hmm pretty interesting stuff, any one have it long term?

this site (<a href="www.por15canada.com">www.por15canada.com</a>)sells some sorta' starter type kit that can cover around 12 square feet of stuff...
so i might give it a try in the summer time...

and i'll probably just buy it online to save the hassle of going to red deer for it.

when i come around to it i'll try let everyone now how it's holding up n' all.  <!--emo&:thumbs-up:--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':thumbs-up:'><!--endemo-->

Goto UAP Napa Auto Parts, buy a can of Fluid Film.

This is the best and cheapest way to prevent/cure rust. Best of all, you can spray it on just about anything.

This stuff has completely replaced my cans of WD-40 and Liquid Wrench.

the absolute best way to stop rust from spreading is just sanding/grinding the hell out of it until you can't feel anymore bumps.. then put on some rust inhibitor then paint right over it... shouldn't take too long... put about a days work into it (depending on how much rust you've got) <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

I agree, With my 1989 RX-7 Turbo II There was some rust here and there, a little on the drivetrain (surface rust) and on bolts and even a little on the suspension (not very appealing).

The best things I found was using the Dremmel tool (or a screwdriver with a rust removing head for it for larger areas) and then basically grind it away until you can't see very much rust (or none at all) Then use that Rust Check stuff, do about 2 coats of that stuff, then do 2 coats using either Tremclad Automotive Rust paint (any color you desire) or the Factory paint (I have used the Near Perfect Match stuff from Canadian tire and it works pretty good).

On Areas where I just used Rust Check's rust killer, the rust eventually started coming back again, but in areas where I grinded almost all the rust off and then used it along with some tremclad it has never come through again.

I unfortunately never did get a chance to try do something about the rust.
Hopefully sometime though (soon ....).

Thanks for the input everyone.
